Dennis gave a new direction to the sublime concept by christianly reinterpreting Longinus's sublime theory rediscovered by Boileau, but it was hidden by Burke and not properly appreciated. The purpose of this paper is to justify the role of Dennis in the formation of the modern sublime concept. Dennis is the man who shifted the sublime's main emotions from wonder to fear. He interprets that Longinus's ‘great ideas’ are religious ideas, which provoke us a enthusiastic passions with fear. Dennis gives the sublime a new direction by designating the fear which Longinus regarded as a subordinate emotion as the sublime's main feeling and insisting that the fear brings us great pleasure. He left the task of identify the possibility of unpleasant pleasure. He also distinguished sublime from beauty before Burke. It became the foundation that forms the sublime aesthetic that is distinct from the aesthetic of beauty.
