The purpose of this study is to clarify the moral function of the shame centered on the philosophy of Xunzi. In Xunzi philosophy, shame is passive emotion and active emotion. First, passive shame is related to feelings of dislike. This is called shame in terms of one’s circumstances(勢辱). Xunzi uses passive shame to prevent the act from harming others by an excessive desire. Next, Xunzi argues that human beings can adjust their innate basic desires to the social context through active shame. By learning li(禮) and yi(義), humans have active shame. Sham associated with ritual(廉恥) adjusts the desire fulfillment to the social context. Shame associated with righteousness(義辱) acts as a courage to practice ritual to human beings. In Xunzi philosophy, shame acts as a driving force for human beings to move in the path of learning and moral practice. In other words, shame is the emotions of self-consideration and self-reflection.

본 연구는 순자철학을 중심으로 수치심의 도덕적 기능에 대해 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 순자철학에서 수치심은 수동적인 감정이자 능동적인 감정이다. 먼저, 수동적 수치심은 인간의 기본감정 중 싫어함과 관련되어 있으며 세욕(勢辱)이라 한다. 순자는 수동적 수치심인 세욕(勢辱)을 이용해 과도한 욕구 충족에 의해 타인을 해치는 행위를 막고자 한다. 다음으로, 순자는 인간이 능동적 수치심을 통해 인간의 타고난 기본 욕구를 사회적 맥락에 맞게 조율할 수 있게 된다고 주장한다. 인간은 예와 의를 배움으로써 능동적 수치심인 염치(廉恥)와 의욕(義辱)을 가지게 된다. 염치는 욕구 충족을 사회적 맥락에 맞게 조절한다. 의욕은 인간에게 예의를 실천할 수 있는 용기로 작용한다. 순자철학에서 수치심은 인간이 배움의 길과 도덕 실천의 길로 나아갈 수 있게 하는 추동력으로 작용한다. 즉, 수치심은 자기배려의 감정이자 자기 반성적인 감정이다.
