The aim of this paper is to explicate Dewey’s aesthetics as ‘aesthetics of meaning’, examining that aesthetic experience is continuous with ordinary one. Dewey’s idea that aesthetic meaning describes ‘a pervasive qualitative whole’ in non-cognitive dimension of experience was often misunderstood and criticized as a form of idealism, and also was considered to be inconsistent with his instrumentalism. However, in Dewey’s philosophy of experience, art is meant to overcome traditional dualism, and its meaning is to reach a culmination by being consummated in aesthetic dimension. Furthermore, drawing largely on empirical evidences from cognitive science, Johnson re-elaborates Dewey’s aesthetic claims by showing how a quality plays an important role in creating meaning. In this way Johnson interprets Dewey’s aesthetics as aesthetics of meaning, which comprehends feeling and thought. In this picture meaning is a completion of qualitative dimension of experience, and grounds thought on the other hand. Dewey’s aesthetics of meaning bears significance in offering a explanation which comprehends feeling and thought, thereby casting new lights on the relation of aesthetics to philosophy.

이 논문의 목적은 일상적 경험으로부터 미학적 경험이 어떻게 발생하는지에 관한 듀이의 해명을 검토하여 그의 미학을 존슨의 관점에서 ‘의미의 미학’으로 해석하는 데 있다. 듀이의 미학은 미학적 의미를 경험의 비인지적 차원인 ‘편재적인 질적 전체’로 기술하고 있으며, 이 때문에 관념론이라는 오해와 함께 자신의 도구주의와도 일관성을 가질 수 없다고 비판받았다. 그러나 듀이의 경험철학에서 예술은 느낌과 사고를 포괄하는 연속적인 경험의 국면이며, 그것은 전통적인 느낌/사고 이원론을 극복하기 위한 듀이적 시도였다. 존슨은 최근의 인지과학적 탐구 성과를 수용하여 질성에 관한 듀이의 주장이 옳았다는 것을 구체적으로 해명하며 이런 관점에서 듀이의 미학을 느낌과 사고를 포괄하는 의미의 미학으로 해석한다. 의미의 미학은 경험의 질적 측면을 완성하여 의미를 창조하고, 또한 미학적 경험에서 완성된 의미를 통해 사고의 근거를 형성하여 철학의 기초가 된다. 따라서 듀이의 의미의 미학은 느낌과 사고를 포괄하는 해명을 제공하며, 나아가 미학과 철학의 관계를 재조명하는 시각을 제안한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
