This paper is a contribution to the contemporary debate over the question whether or not On Certainty leans towards epistemological relativism. At the core of On Certainty, we find arguments and conceptions that are already present in the Philosophical Investigations, but that these arguments are situated in quite a different context. Overlooking this fact, many scholars rely on ‘form of life’, which is mainly used in the Philosophical Investigations and reappears only once in On Certainty. This is to introduce some central arguments for and against attributing epistemological relativism to On Certainty. Unfortunately, however, this choice forces us to read On certainty in a way Wittgenstein never intended. Therefore, to follow main arguments in On Certainty in a stricter way, I will introduce ‘world-picture’ which is a key concept of On Certainty and used with a slightly different emphasis compared with ‘form of life. Consequently, I will give my own interpretation of On Certainty in relation to epistemological relativism, excavating critical clues to re-evaluate several established arguments for and against attributing epistemological relativism to On Certainty.

이 논문의 목표는 비트겐슈타인의『확실성에 관하여』에 인식론적 상대주의를 귀속시킬 수 있는지에 관한 최근 논쟁에 기여하는 것을 목표로 한다.『확실성』의 중심에는 이미『철학적 탐구』에 나오는 논쟁과 개념들이 있다. 하지만 분명한 것은 그것들이 이전과 상당히 다른 맥락에서 다시 등장한다는 것이다. 이 점을 간과한 많은 연구자들이『탐구』에서 주로 사용되고『확실성』에는 단 한 번만 등장하는 ‘삶의 형태’ 개념을 『확실성』에 인식적 상대주의를 귀속시키는데 동의 또는 거부하는 핵심 논증을 설명하기 위해 사용한다. 하지만 이러한 선택은 우리로 하여금 비트겐슈타인이 결코 의도하지 않았던 방식으로『확실성』을 해석하도록 강요한다. 따라서『확실성』의 핵심 쟁점들을 보다 엄격히 따라가기 위해서, 필자는『확실성』의 핵심개념이자 동시에 ‘삶의 형태’에 비해서 다소 다른 강조점을 가지고 사용된 ‘세계상’ 개념을 분석도구로 사용할 것이다. 그 결과로부터『확실성』의 핵심주장에 대한 보다 정확한 이해를 확보함으로써『확실성』에 인식적 상대주의를 귀속시키는 문제에 관한 기존의 논의들을 재평가하는 중요한 단서를 발굴하게 될 것이다.
