In this paper, I criticize Kuhn’s two arguments against convergent realism. First, since Einsteinian mechanics is closer to Aristotelian mechanics than to Newtonian mechanics, the correspondence theory of truth cannot be applied to a scientific theory, and we can’t say that science moves toward truths. I reply that this argument by Kuhn is invalid and its premise is false. Second, the theoretical terms of an old paradigm and those of a new paradigm refer to different theoretical entities, so we cannot say that the new paradigm is closer to the truth than the old paradigm. I reply that this argument by Kuhn relies on Frege’s descriptive theory of reference, but there are other theories of reference: the causal theory, the intentional theory, and the partial reference theory. The partial reference theory holds that we can say that the theoretical terms of an old paradigm partially refer to the sam theoretical entities as those of a new paradigm.

나는 이 논문에서 수렴적 실재론(Convergent Realism)을 비판하는 쿤의 다음 두 논증을 비판한다. 첫째, 아인슈타인 물리학이 뉴턴 물리학보다 아리스토텔레스 물리학에 더 가깝기 때문에 진리에 대한 대응론이 과학이론에 적용될 수 없고, 과학이 진리를 향해 나아간다고 말할 수도 없다. 쿤의 이 논증은 형식도 부당하고 전제도 그르다. 둘째, 옛 패러다임의 이론용어와 새 패러다임의 이론용어가 서로 다른 대상을 가리키기 때문에 과학은 진리를 향해 나아간다고 말할 수 없다. 쿤의 이 논증은 지시에 대한 프레게의 기술론에 의존하고 있는데, 지시이론에는 프레게의 기술론만 있는 것이 아니라 인과론, 의도론, 부분적 지시론도 있다. 부분적 지시론에 의하면 옛 패러다임의 이론용어는 새 패러다임의 이론용어가 가리키는 대상을 부분적으로 가리킨다.
