Long before the emergence of the waves of postmodernism, Dewey already had a sharp insight into the problems of the very conception of universal reason underlying the modern philosophy. Dewey was one of the ‘post-postmodern philosophers’ as he delivered a radical criticism against the unrealistic aspects of the traditional objectivist conception of reason cherished in modernity. Yet, Dewey at the same time went beyond the postmodernism which has left the world full of ‘plays’ without any constraint. The main purpose of this paper is to re-examine both the view that strongly criticizes the relativistic aspects of Dewey’s philosophy, and the view that attempts to dismantle the constructive aspects of it. By doing so, I try to show that Dewey was a philosopher who pursued a whole new way of thinking that transcends the objectivism/relativism dichotomy itself. Dewey’s philosophy in this respect may well be dubbed as ‘post-postmodernism,’ in that it goes beyond the dichotomous confrontation between the traditional objectivism and the postmodern relativism.

듀이는 포스트모더니즘의 물결이 일어나기 전 근세 철학의 보편적 이성의 문제점들을 꿰뚫어 보고 있었다. 듀이는 낡은 이성의 허구성과 전통 철학의 방법론을 비판하는 급진적 입장에 서 있었던 동시에 우리의 모든 것을 근거 없이 떠도는 무제약적 놀이로 열어 버린 포스트모던 철학 또한 넘어서 있다는 점에서 ‘포스트-포스트모던 철학자’이다. 이 논문의 주된 목적은 듀이 철학의 상대주의적 측면을 강력하게 거부하는 진영과 듀이의 건설적 측면을 해체하려고 하는 진영의 비판의 내용을 살펴봄으로써 듀이가 ‘객관주의 아니면 상대주의’라는 이분법적 사고를 넘어 서 있는 철학자이며, 실용주의적 계몽을 이끌고 있는 그의 사유가 ‘포스트-포스트모던적’이라는 점을 드러내는 데 있다.
