Nobong Min Jeong-jung (1638-1692), a politician of Joseon in the late-17th century has a great importance in both the central political world and the ruling class called Sarim. As an excellent administrator, he successfully led the reform of the system and the relief of the people. In addition, as a disciple of Song Si-yeol and Song Jun-gil, he left important traces in the field of the theory of Li (rites), though he did not deal with the metaphysical problems of Neo-Confucianism. Concerning the important issues related to the theory of Li at the time, such as 1) What mourning dress a grandson should put on when the father cannot supervise the grandfather’s funeral rites; 2) What position an adopted son should take when a biological is born after the adoption for carrying on a family line; and 3) What mourning dress a king should put on when a queen dies, Min Jeong-jung actively participated in the debates, suggesting his own theory. This study of Min Jeong-jun has a significance that there is no preceding study of him and there is insufficient research on the issue of Li. Along with this, this study would be helpful for the understanding of reality in high-rank bureaucrats in the late-17th century and their corresponding policies.

17세기 후반 조선의 정치가 노봉 민정중은 중앙정계와 사림 양쪽에서 모두 큰 비중을 차지했던 인물이다. 탁월한 경세 관료였던 그는 제도개혁과 백성 구휼 업무를 성공적으로 이끌었다. 또한 그는 송시열과 송준길의 제자로서, 비록 성리학의 형이상학적 문제들을 다루지는 않았지만 예학 분야에 중 요한 발자취를 남겼다. 아버지가 폐질 에 걸려 손자가 할아버지의 상 을 대신 주관할 때 어떤 상복을 입어야 하는지(민신 ‘대복 ’ 사건), 입후 한 뒤에 친자가 태어날 경우 계후자 의 위상을 어떻게 해야 하는지, 왕비의 상에 왕은 어떤 상복을 입어야 하는지 등 당시 예학 관련 주요 이슈들에 대해 민정중은 본인의 논리를 개진하며 적극적으로 참여했다. 이러한 민정중에 대 한 연구는 현재 그에 관한 선행연구가 존재하지 않는다는 점, 해당 예 문제 에 대한 연구가 미진하다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 아울러 17세기 후반 고위 관 료들의 현실인식과 정책대응을 이해하는데 도움이 되리라 판단한다.
