Until recently, the dominant view of interpreting Hwadam(花潭) Seo Gyeongdeok (徐敬德)’s theory of li 理 (Principle) and qi 氣(material force) is that he argues material force-monism or theory of material force. I have already criticized this view before. This paper tries to refocus my view by analyzing Hagok (霞谷) Jeong Jedu (鄭齊斗)’s view on Seo Gyeong-deok’s theory of Principle and material force. First of all, to show contemporary significance of Neo-Confucian Principle material force paradigm, I review the conversation between Pope Francis and Eugenio Scalfari that took place recently in Italy. And I, based on Jeong Jedu’s interpretation, argue that Seo Gyeong-deok’s philosophy should be interpreted as a view that principle and material force cannot be separated each other. So I will show that Seo Gyeong-deok’s philosophy should not be interpreted as material force- monism(氣一元論). Jeong Jedu thought that the interaction between will(志) and material force is based on the structure that unites principle and material force, and that Seo Gyeong-deok’s theory of principle and material force should also be understood as such a structure.

지금까지 화담 서경덕의 이기론에 대한 연구는 기일원론(氣一元論) 또는 유기론(唯氣論)이라는 견해가 주류를 이루고 있다. 필자는 이런 견해에 문제를 제기한 바 있는데, 이 논문에서는 조선의 양명학자인 하곡 정제두가 화담의 이기론에 대해서 밝힌 견해를 분석함으로써 필자의 기존 주장을 재확인하고 자 한다. 먼저 성리학의 이기론이 현대에서도 유의미함을 확인하기 위해서 최 근 이태리에서 있었던 교황과 언론인 스칼파리의 대화를 인용한다. 이어서 하곡 정제두의 해석을 통해서 화담의 철학사상을 이기합일(理氣合一) 또는 이기불리(理氣不離)의 본체론으로 해석해야 함을 논증하여, 화담의 철학을 유기 론(論 )이나 기일원론(氣一元論)으로 보는 일반적 해석을 비판하고, 이와 차별화해야 함을 주장할 것이다. 하곡은 의지(志)와 기(氣)가 상호 전화(轉化) 가능한 근거를 “이기불상리지묘”(理氣不相離之妙 ), 즉 이기(理氣)의 일원(=합일)적 구조로 보고, 화담의 본체론(=이기론) 역시 이런 관점에서 이해할 수 있다고 본 것이다. :
