This article aims to analyze the content of Reagan-Gorbachev’s five summits and to figure out its implications. Past studies had not dealt with the summits carefully despite the significance. This paper considers the main agendas of these summits by dividing them into military, human rights, and third world issues. The most crucial point for the military sector was to narrow the gap on SDI. After the confrontation of the subject was resolved, their negotiations made rapid progress. The human rights agenda has also become more flexible as the two sides continue to meet. The Soviet Union has become less ideological than the United States in solving third world problems. The most crucial issue at the summit was SDI, which indicates Reagan's strong military plan was the main cause of the end of the Cold War. Nevertheless, without Gorbachev's forward-looking attitude towards America, the talks would have failed. This study concludes that these five summits had a significant impact on building trust between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R., and it led to the end of the Cold War.

이 논문의 목적은 레이건과 고르바초프의 다섯 차례 정상회담 내용을 분석하고, 그 함의를 파악하기 위 해서이다. 이들의 정상회담은 냉전종식에 큰 영향을 주었음에도 기존연구에서 면밀히 다루어지지 않았다. 본 논문은 정상회담의 주요의제를 군사, 인권, 제3세계 문제로 나누어 고찰하였다. 군사부분에 있어서 가 장 중요한 문제는 전략방위구상(SDI)에 대한 입장 차이를 줄이는 것이었고, 결국 이 문제가 해결되고 난후 양측의 회담은 급진전되었다. 인권의제 역시 양측은 만남을 계속할수록 유연한 입장이 되었다. 제 3세계 문제 해결에 있어서는 소련이 미국보다 더 이념논리에서 벗어나는 특징을 보였다. 이들의 정상회담에서 가장 큰 논의사항은 SDI였으며, 이것은 레이건의 강력한 군사계획이 냉전종식의 주요한 원인을 제공하였 음을 말해준다. 그러나 고르바초프의 미국에 대한 전향적인 태도가 없었더라면 회담은 실패로 귀결되었을 것이다. 결국 이러한 다섯 차례의 정상회담을 통해 미소 양국은 신뢰를 쌓았고 이는 냉전종식의 초석이 되 었다.
