This article discusses Aristotle’s rational choice(prohairesis). Rational choice is a core concept in that it can provide keys through which we can understand many vital concepts in his ethical theory. However, even with this importance, his comments regarding rational choice sometimes cause some confusion to his readers. We suggest that for us to understand the rational choice properly, it is necessary to scrutinize Aristotle’s discussions on related concepts, such as moral virtue, character, state and wish. Through this scrutinization, we propose that Aristotle’s rational choice is the particularization of wish. For, first of all, given that rational choice is also a sort of desire, among three desires Aristotle mentions wish is the only rational desire located in the rational part of the soul. Besides, the function of rational choice is to distinguish various moral characters well, and this is compatible with a property of wish in which it discriminates each agent’s moral character regarding one’s relationship to the good(agathon). To argue this, we first explain what the ‘apparent inconsistency’ in Aristotle’s comments is regarding rational choice and its related terms. Furthermore, we introduce the various positions of the scholars about the inconsistency in question. Finally, we give the conclusion by endorsing one of the positions and complementing it a bit.

이 글은 아리스토텔레스의 합리적 선택 개념에 관한 논의이다. ‘합리적 선택’(prohairesis) 은 그의 윤리 이론의 여러 중요 개념들을 이해하는 단서를 제공하는 핵심 요소이다. 그러나이러한 중요성에도 불구하고 이와 관련된 아리스토텔레스의 언급이 다소 혼란을 주는 측면이 있다. 이 글은 특히 덕(ēthikē aretē), 성격(ēthos), 상태(hexis), 바램(boulēsis) 등의 유관개념들에 대한 아리스토텔레스의 논의에 우리가 더 면밀하게 분석해야 하는 부분이 있으며, 그 내용에 관한 검토를 통해서 합리적 선택의 진의(眞意)를 파악할 수 있다는 논지를 펼친다. 이러한 분석과 검토를 통해 이 글은 아리스토텔레스의 합리적 선택은 ‘바램의 구체화’라는 주장을 제시한다. 왜냐하면, 먼저, 합리적 선택도 일종의 욕구(orexis)인데, 아리스토텔레스가 제시하는 세 가지 욕구 중 바램만이 영혼의 이성적 부분에 속하는 유일한 ‘합리적 욕구’ 이기 때문이다. 그리고 또한 합리적 선택의 기능은 무엇보다 다양한 성격(ēthos)들을 잘 구별해주는 것인데, 이는 좋음(agathon)에 대한 관계를 통해서 행위자의 성격을 차별화하는 바램의 속성과도 일맥상통하기 때문이다. 이러한 논증을 위하여 이 글은 먼저 합리적 선택과 유관 개념들에 관한 논의에 담긴 ‘외견상의 불일치’가 무엇인지 밝히고, 이 불일치와 유관 개념들에 대한 연구자들의 다양한 입장을 소개한 뒤, 이 중 한 입장을 옹호하고 보완하면서 결론을 제시할 것이다.
