This paper contains a discussion on the definition and its properties of Topos, which are discussed in Topics and Rhetoric. F. Solmsen divided the topos of Rhetoric into common topos and specific topos, and thought of them as meaning the form of each argument and the specific premise used in that form. It is generally accepted in subsequent studies that topos relates to the form of the argument that it constitutes. However, researchers are divided on the fact that it works as a premise for argument. These two seem incompatible. Because the form of the argument is universal, but the premise of the argument must contain concrete details. ‘Is topos as a proposition and topos as a form of argument incompatible with each other?‘ Taking this as a subject, this paper presented the definition and properties of the topos that can reconcile the two concepts, and tried to justify it. First, this paper presents a tentative definition of Topos by examining the enthymeme of Rhetoric and its case. Second, this paper justified such provisional definitions in the light of Topics, Rhetoric, Prior Analytics and Metaphysics. Then, thirdly, this paper examined the properties of Topos in such a definition and finally, examined whether the definition and attributes of the Topos presented by this paper could be the answer to the topic presented above.

이 논문은 『토피카』와 『수사술』에서 논의되는 토포스의 정의와 그 속성에 대한 논의를 담고 있다. 졸름젠이 『수사술』의 토포스를 공통 토포스와 특수 토포스로 구분한 뒤, 그것들을 각기 논증의 형식과 그 형식에서 사용되는 구체적인 전제를 의미하는 것으로 생각하였다. 토포스가 그로부터 구성되는 논증의 형식과 관련되어 있다는 점은 후속 연구들 속에서도 대체로 받아들여지고 있다. 그러나 그것이 논증의 전제로서 작동한다는 점에 대해서는 연구자들의 의견과 해석이 엇갈리고 있다. 논증 형식이란 보편적인 것이지만, 논증의 전제는 구체적인 내용을 담고 있어야 하므로, 둘은 양립 불가능한 것처럼 보인다. 과연 ‘명제로서의 토포스’와 ‘논증 형식으로서의 토포스’는 서로 조화될 수 없는 개념인가? 본고는 이것을 문제의식으로 삼아 두 개념을 조화시킬 수 있는 토포스의 정의와 속성을 제시하고 그에 대한 정당화를 시도하였다. 본고는 첫째, 『수사술』의 엔튀메마와 그 사례를 검토함으로써 토포스에 대한 잠정적 정의를 제시하고, 둘째, 그러한 잠정적 정의를 『토피카』와 『수사술』 및 『분석론 전서』와 『형이상학』 등에 비추어 정당화하였다. 그런 다음 셋째, 정당화된 토포스의 정의 속에서 드러나는 토포스의 속성을 검토하였고, 마지막으로 넷째, 본고가 설명하는 토포스의 정의와 속성이 위에서 제시한 문제의식에 대해 해답이 될 수 있는지 확인하였다.
