In pre-modern Korea, “literature” and “scholarship” compromised with political authority and promoted it, or criticized it and sought new methods and contents. Arguing originality of literature without considering the relationship with political authority is not correspond to reality. The most important system in realization of political authority was the method of selecting talents and managing manpower. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehend the true nature of civil service examination system in order to understand drift of political authority and development of li`terature and scholarship. Previous researches on examination system of Joseon focused on the history of system and selection of talented. However, styles and titles of examination demonstrates the regime’s intend to verify contemporary intellects’ sense of reality through literature and scholarship. An overall and scientific analysis on system of the Joseon dynasty requires not only investigating the history of the system, enforcement regulations, and appointments of successful candidates, but also detailed investigation into styles and titles of examination questions, circulation of essential common books (rhyme dictionaries and wordbooks), textbooks for preparation, and compilations of answer sheets have to be studied. These aspects would establish a firm understanding of academic tendency and cultural capability of each era, history of academic dispute, and chronological change of academic method. This paper sets a guideline to follow-up researches by introducing various examination related materials, e.g. a list of successful candidates, literary collections, compilation of answer sheets, miscellaneous records, separate records, exam papers.

한국의 근대 이전의 ‘문’과 ‘학’은 정치권력과 화해하여 그것을 추동하거나 혹은 정치권력을 비판하면서 새로운 방법과 내용을 모색해 왔다. 정치권력과의 관계를 고려하지 않고 문학의 독자성을 운위하는 것은 실상에 맞지 않는다. 종래 정치권력의 구현에서 가장 중요한 제도가 인재 선발과 인력 관리의 방식이었다. 이에 정치권력의 향배를 이해하고 문과 학의 발전 양상을 살피기 위해서는 과거 제도의 본질을 제대로 파악할 필요가 있다. 종래 조선시대 과거에 관한 연구는 주로 제도의 연혁과 합격자 등용의 사실에 초점을 맞추어 왔다. 하지만 과거에서 부과된 문체나 제목은, 당시 국가가 인재에게 요구하는 현실감각을 문학 및 학문의 내용을 통해서 검증하고자 하는 이념과 논리를 담고 있다. 따라서 과거제도를 전면적, 과학적으로 연구하기 위해서는 시행 세칙을 검토하는 이외에, 부과 문체 및 제목을 세밀하게 검토하고, 필수 공용서적(운서, 자서 등), 수험대비용 서적, 수험결과 편찬물의 유통을 조사하여, 각 시대의 학술 경향과 문화적 역량, 학술논쟁의 역사와 학술방법의 변화를 이해하는 바탕으로 삼을 필요가 있다. 필자는 과거 관련 자료가 방목 자료 이외에, 문집, 과문편집본, 필기잡록류, 단행(별행) 자료, 시권 등 다양한 종류의 문헌 자료에 편재되어 있음에 주목하여, 향후의 연구방향 설정에 작은 도움을 주고자 했다.
