We study at the differences in innovation persistence that occur when intellectual property rights are used as a means of protecting innovation by using the firm-level survey data. Comparative analysis is made between manufacturing and service industries, especially considering the different innovation characteristics of each industry in looking at these relationships. First, our finding show that the use of intellectual property rights to protect innovation has a positive effect on the sustainability of innovation. This is an official means of protecting innovation, and intellectual property rights contribute to companies continuing to carry out innovative activities. Moreover, These results support the effectiveness of the intellectual property system. Second, unlike manufacturing, where intellectual property mechanisms were only partially significant, they were found to be an important factor in the persistence of innovation in the service sector. Compared to the importance of the service industry, the discussion on the protection of their intellectual property has been insufficient, and it is difficult to find any related research. Our results suggest that we need to improve the protection system of intellectual property in the service sector and support for intellectual property services to protect intellectual property in the service sector.

본 연구에서는 기업 단위의 조사자료를 활용하여 지식재산권을 혁신 보호수단으로 활용하는 경우 나타나는 혁신지속성 차이를 살펴본다. 특히 이러한 관계를 살펴봄에 있어 제조업과 서비 스업 간 혁신특성의 차이를 고려하여 비교 분석한다. 분석 결과, 혁신보호를 위한 지식재산권 활용은 혁신지속성에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 공식적인 혁신보호 수단으 로서 지식재산권은 기업들이 지속적으로 혁신활동을 수행하는 데 기여하며, 결과적으로 지식재 산권 제도의 실효성을 뒷받침하는 결과다. 아울러 지식재산 메커니즘이 부분적으로만 유의하였 던 제조업과 달리, 서비스업에서는 혁신지속성에 대해 중요한 요인인 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 그간 서비스업이 가지는 중요성에 비해 이들의 지식재산 보호 관련 논의가 미흡하였고 관련 연구도 거의 찾아보기 어려운 실정인 만큼, 서비스업의 지식재산 보호제도 개선과 더불어 서비스업의 지식재산 보호를 위한 지식재산서비스 지원이 필요함을 시사한다고 하겠다.
