The Japanese alphabets was in a competition with Esperanto, a language announced beyond all territories of tribes and classes, at the modern era of Japan in which everything was required to persue an inperialistic manner. For this reason, a confusion of symbol system for establishing a new linguistic scheme. Roman alphabet movement was a result of the confusion casued by the competiton between the ideogram and the imported phonogram. In this essay, I intend to investigate the topological coordinate of Akutagawa’s work beneath the geopolitical environment by deriving from a mismatch between 河童 and ‘Kappa’, presented in his work 改造(1927). Akutagawa literature considers that verbalizing the written is not appropriate. This makes Akutagwa literature a meaningful reference in which we can find clues implying what writing was beneath conditions in 1920’s founded upon Taisho liberalism and the competition between Japanese and Esperanto.
