This study aims to examine the visual value of marbling images and to examine the expressions that appear in contemporary ceramic works. These images have decorative and irregular patterns, and have been used steadily from the past to the present. In addition, since flexible lines and smooth expressions are possible, it can lead to various formative effects. Therefore, the natural and vital image has been used effectively in various fields from products to works. This researcher intends to examine the types and formativeness of such marbling expressions and grasp the meaning within them. Furthermore, based on this, the case of marbling in ceramics was examined and the process through which it appeared was examined. Marbling’s irregularity, rather than a static and organized form of expression, is enough to draw the artist’s free thinking and desire for more creation. It is not a mixture of various different colors or lines, but an abstract pattern that is not organized and is free, and it can effectively express an accidental and organic image. In addition, it can be seen that such marbling has a meaning in the process of making, not simply a consequent image, because it goes through an accidental and unconscious process rather than prediction. The researcher’s idea is that a new visual language can be presented, such as expressing the inner side of the unconscious through marble rather than reproducing a specific object. Therefore, the effects of Marbel’s image on the production of pottery works have been explored through the analysis of the artists through various analysis possibilities.

본 연구는 마블링의 시각적 가치를 조명하고, 현대 도예작품들에서 나타나는 표현들을 고찰하고자 한다. 이러한 표현은 장식적이고 불규칙한 패턴을 지니고 있으며, 과거부터 현재까지 꾸준히 사용해 왔다. 또한, 유기적인 선들과 부드러운 표현이 가능하기에 여러 가지 조형적 효과를 이끌어 줄 수가 있다. 그렇기에 이러한 생명력 있는 이미지는 현대에 이르러서 제품부터 작품까지 다양한 분야에서 효 과적으로 쓰이고 있다. 본 연구자는 이러한 표현의 종류와 조형성을 살펴보고 그 안에 있는 의미를 파 악하였다. 나아가 이를 바탕으로 도예에서 이루어지는 마블링의 사례 알아보고 어떠한 과정을 거쳐서 나타나는지 알아보았다. 표현에 있어서 정적이고 정리된 모습이 아닌 불규칙은 작가의 자유로운 사고와 더 많은 창작의 욕 구를 끌어내기 충분하다. 여러 가지 색상이나 선들이 완전히 혼합되는 것이 아닌, 정리되지 않고 자유 로운 무늬가 큰 특징이며, 추상적인 이미지를 효과적으로 표현할 수 있다. 또한, 이러한 마블링은 예측 보다는 우연적이고 무의식적인 과정을 거치기에 단순히 결과적 이미지가 아니라 만드는 과정에 있어서 도 의미가 존재한다고 볼 수 있다. 특정 대상의 재현보다 마블링을 통해 무의식의 내면을 표현하는 등 새로운 시각적 언어를 제시할 수 있다는 것이 본 연구자의 생각이다. 따라서 이러한 마블의 이미지가 도예작품에 있어서 어떤 효과와 의미가 있는지 작가들 분석을 통해 다양한 발전 가능성을 탐구하였다.
