Even modern ceramic arts are failing to digress very far from the dependence on material properties caused by attributes of materials, while trying to be free from function, due to the expanded scopes and objects of expression. As pragmatic function began to be gradually denied by those, who received art education at universities in the western United States of the 1950s, clay was recognized as an expressive medium and means. Especially, ceramic art works of John Mason were a constant test of dramatic shifts in awareness of the way of handling material properties and of their attributes. His early works displayed untouched traces of pressures and motions of hands and tools created during the forming process, based on extreme plasticity of clay, and went though an experimental transition. Then starting the time when he began to be influenced by minimalism after the mid 60s, his point of view obviously changed to simpleness and conciseness, which went through a restrained and strict control process. In the early stage of his career, he acquired atypical results using clay, as a medium for free and impromptu expressions shown in the process of accepting abstract expressions, but his works turned into forms with vertical structures, installations using ready-made fireproof bricks and geometric forms emphasizing thingness using commercial glaze. He simplifies structures for forming and makes thingness of ceramics stand out for differentiating it from other materials by using clear monochromatic glaze, based on his accumulated experience. He tried not to expose his emotions and intentions to express by appropriately controling variables of forming and plasticity processes ike transformation, shrinkage and unexpected changes through experiments. He developed his own formative language, based on deep understanding and experience of materials and material properties. Inherent concepts and content of crafts rely on the properties of materials used. Crafts are unique in that they are produced by hand and resonate the cultures of the individual regions in which they are produced.

기능의 목적으로부터 벗어나고자 표현범위와 대상의 확대를 시도하는 많은 현대 도예 작가들조차도 점토 본연의 물성을 간과하기란 쉽지 않다. 1950년대 접어들며 미국 서부의 미술대학에서 교육을 받은 이들에 의해 사용을 목적으로 하는 기능이 점차 부정되기 시작하였다. 그들에 의해 점토는 표현의 매 체이자 수단으로 인식되기 시작한다. 현대 도예의 태동에 뚜렷한 족적을 남긴 이들 가운데 존 메이슨 의 도자 조형 작업은 물성을 다루는 방법과 속성에 대한 인식에서 극적인 변화를 끊임없이 실험한 독 특한 경우라고 볼 수 있다. 초기 작업에서는 점토의 가소성을 이용하여 손과 도구의 압력, 동작의 흔 적을 고스란히 드러내는 시도를 하게 된다. 점차 실험적 변이과정을 거치게 되면서, 1960년대 중반 이 후 미니멀주의의 영향을 받게 된다. 이후의 과정은 절제되고 엄격한 실험과정을 거치며 단순함과 간결 함으로 대표할 수 있는 존 메이슨의 특징적 작업들을 활발하게 발표하게 된다. 초기에 추상표현의 수 용과정에서 보여준 자유롭고 즉흥적인 작업 방식에서 미니멀주의 작가들과의 교류를 통해 물성을 대하 는 태도가 극명하게 변하였다. 점차 수직적 구도의 형태 실험, 레디메이드( Ready made)로서 내화벽돌 을 사용한 설치작업, 상업 유약을 사용한 사물성이 돋보이는 기하형태로 변이과정을 거치게 된다. 형 태를 단순하게 만들고 표면에 선명한 단색 유약을 적용함으로써 특징적인 도자의 사물성이 돋보이는 방법으로까지 발전시킨다. 변형, 수축, 요변 등의 성형과 소성 과정의 변수들을 실험을 통해 엄격하고 적절히 통제함으로써 감정과 표현 의도를 직접적으로 드러내지 않으려 했다. 이러한 작업 방식은 점토, 유약 등의 재료와 물성에 대한 깊은 이해와 오랜 경험을 통해 가능하였고 동시대의 작가들과 구별되는 특징적 조형 언어를 확장하게 되었다.
