This study aims to establish a concept of academic competence, and to examine components of academic competence, in the hopes of developing a general education curriculum for international students. Academic competence refers to a student’s knowledge and abilities to process new information in the context of academic performance. It includes linguistic competence, knowledge competence, skill competence, cognitive competence, and affective competence. General education courses designed for international students at Korean universities have focused on improving Korean proficiency, or on training certain study skills that can be used immediately in the context of academic performance. However, the current courses do not seem to be sufficient to enhance the academic competence of international students. This is because other elements, such as students’ background knowledge and content knowledge for learning new things, their logical and critical thinking skills, as well as their affective factors, such as their motivation and attitudes toward learning, should be accumulated and improved along with their Korean proficiency, in order to enhance their academic competence. We thus proposed an academic competence based curriculum which is designed for international students, including all components of academic competence. In this curriculum, we varied the proportion of each competence presented above based on the Korean proficiency level of students. In addition, we proposed a separate, mandatory core curriculum, along withan optional curriculum, to enable students to further enhance their specific academic competence. Lastly, examples of course subjects were also presented.

이 연구는 외국인 유학생 대상 교양 교육과정 개발을 위한 기초 연구로 외국인 유학생에게 요구되는 학업 역량이 무엇인지 개념을 정립하고, 학업 역량의 구성 요소를 살피는 데에 목적을 두었다. 학업 역량(academic competence)은 다양한 학업 수행 상황에서 새로운 학습 내용을 처리할 때 필수적으로 사용하는 지식과 능력을 말하며, 언어적 역량, 지식 역량, 기술 역량, 인지적 역량, 정의적 역량을 포함한 다. 그동안 국내 대학에서 외국인 유학생 대상의 교양 교육은 한국어 숙달도 향상이나 학업 수행 상황에서 즉각적으로 활용 가능한 학습 기술을 연마하는 데에 집중하였다. 그러나 학업 역량을 제고하기 위해서는 새로운 학습을 위한 배경 지식과 내용 지식, 사고력과 학습 동기 및 태도 등 학습자의 정의적 요인이 모두 고르게 성장할 필요가 있다. 이에 본고는 학업 역량의 구성 요소를 고르게 포함한 학업 역량 기반의 교양 교육과정을 제안하였다. 이 교육과정에는 언어적 역량, 지식 역량, 기술 역량, 인지적 역량, 정의적 역량이 학습자 숙달도에 따라 비율을 달리하여 포함되었으며, 공통과정과 선택과정을 분리하여 필수적으로 이수해야 할 교육과정을 마련하고, 학습자의 필요에 따라 특정 학업 역량을 더 강화할 수 있도록 하였다. 또한, 구체적인 교과목의 예를 제시하였다. 주제어: 외국인
