Education and specialized vocational education have been strengthened over the years. For one, market logic has been strongly applied to these fields. Also, the voices calling for the strengthening of liberal arts education are getting louder. Finally, people are becoming more critical of the seemingly distorted value of a college education and its role in society. Against this backdrop, citizen education, which plays an important role in liberal arts education, has also been emphasized. Furthermore, the heightened awareness of human rights which is one of the elements composing mature civic consciousness, along with the value and necessity of educating society about these rights has also been emerging. However, most of the current human rights education at universities is limited in that it is conducted only in the form of law and order. In order to overcome this limitation, we need an education system allowing for students to learn about human rights culturally, as well as from a purely legal perspective. The main point of this study is to show that literature can accomplish this task. For literature can pinpoint various problems that the law can’t adequately deal with, and it is the best way to heighten people’s awareness and sensitivity to individual human rights. It does so by making readers find the problems by themselves, and then to engage in rational thinking and choice-making, unlike the methods used in the more legal approaches to the study of human rights, which often seem dehumanized thanks to the forced and unnatural jargon that they employ.

전문화된 직업교육이 강화되고 시장논리가 강하게 적용되면서 대학 교육의 가치와 역할이 왜곡되는 현상에 대한 비판으로 교양교육을 강화하자는 목소리가 커지고 있다. 이런 배경에서 교양교육의 중요한 역할 중 하나인 시민교육의 중요성 또한 강조되고 있으며, 성숙한 시민의식을 구성하는 요소 중 하나인 인권의식과 그에 대한 교육의 가치와 필요성 또한 부각되고 있다. 그러나 현재 대학에서 진행되는 인권 교육은 대부분 법질서를 알려주는 차원의 형태로만 진행된다는 점에서 한계를 보인다. 이런 한계를 극복하기 위해서는 법적 권리를 알려주는 교육과 함께 인권을 문화적으로 습득하게 하는 교육이 필요한데, 그 역할을 문학이 담당할 수 있다는 것이 본 연구의 요지이다. 문학은 사회적 관습이나 문화와 같이 법적 심판과 처벌의 대상이 되기에 모호한 영역까지 다룰 수 있으며, 또한 가해자= 처벌, 피해자=보상과 같은 이분법적 시각에서 벗어나 죄책감이나 반성과 같은 윤리 차원의 문제처럼 법이 관여할 수 없는 부분에 대해서도 이야기할 수 있다. 무엇보다 독자로 하여금 문학 작품을 통해 이런 것들을 살펴보는 과정에서 하나의 결론이나 정답을 받아들이는 것이 아니라 스스로 문제를 인식하 고 자신의 모습을 되돌아보기도 하며, 스스로 옳고 그름 바람직한 태도 고민하고 선택하게 한다. 이처럼 문학은 법이 다룰 수 없거나 다루지 않는 다양한 문제를 모두 살필 수 있으며, 또한 강제적 언어로 구성된 법의 방식과 달리 독자로 하여금 스스로 문제를 발견하고 합리적인 사고와 선택을 하도록 만든다는 점에서 개개인의 인권감수성을 향상시키는데 최적의 방법이며, 그런 점에서 문학을 통한 인권교육은 교양교육의 의의를 충족시키기에 적합한 방법론이라 할 수 있다.
