This paper examines, the Fundamental Law of Korean Language since it was enacted. We looked at the overall results of the survey on the Korean language and had the opportunity to identify the significance and role of the “investigation of the people's awareness of language” as a regular but overall survey of the Korean language. In particular, this discussion considers the lack of follow-up plans for a long-term language survey, the need for supplemental measures for the fourth survey of the people's awareness of language in the coming years, and continuous research activities and attention to the purpose of conducting the survey from a public perspective. As well as the expectation that the results of the survey will be reflected in an effective national language policy. It is self-evident that the results of the survey have been both quantitative and subjectively obvious. Based on the policy environment of the basic plan for the development of Korean language and the basic law of the Korean language, the people's language life as a result of the change is essential to policy change. Looking back on the results of the survey conducted so far, continued efforts will have to be made to ensure that state-managed policies can bring about efficacy in terms of applying the Korean language policy at a time when the next survey will be conducted again soon.

본고는 2005년 국어기본법 제정과 2007년 국어 발전 기본계획 수립 등 을 바탕으로 한 그간의 국어 실태 조사 시행 성과를 조사 시기･목적･방법 별로 살펴보고, 정기적이면서도 대규모 국어 실태 조사인 국립국어원 ‘국 민의 언어 의식 조사’에 대한 의의와 역할에 대해 재정립해 보았다. 특히 이번 논의는 현시점에서의 중장기 언어 실태 조사 계획의 부재, 또 금년 에 시행될 제4차 국민의 언어 의식 조사에 대한 보완책 등에 대해 검토하 며 정기적이고 장기적인 국어 실태 조사 시행과 국어 정책 관리 차원에의 관심을 촉구하는 데 연구 의의를 가진다.
