“Marathon”(2005) was the first Korean film to bring about an improvement in social interest in and awareness of people with autistic disability. By analyzing the meaning of linguistic and visual expression, and the narrative in “Marathon” using an interdisciplinary method which converges cultural studies and disability studies, this study seeks to critically examine the meaning of the representation of people with autistic disability in “Marathon” and clarify the tasks that remain to make a society in which people with autistic disability are not excluded from film and reality. Based on my research I argue that “Marathon” criticizes social prejudice against autistic disability and shows the process of efforts to fully understand autistic disability beyond the misunderstanding caused by opposing oppositional perceptions and representations. Through the narrative of mutual growth of people with the disabilities and the non-disabilities, the film meaningfully reproduces the right of people with autistic disability to self-determination and communication as a member of society. In spite of this significant representation of rights and communication, in “Marathon”, people with autistic disability are described as too pure or excellent, and the film displays a very limited understanding of the independence that can be gained through inclusive education and vocational rehabilitation. In addition, social inclusion beyond personal socialization still remains a challenge.

<말아톤>은 자폐성 장애인에 대한 사회적 관심과 인식 개선을 이끌어 낸 최초의 한국 영화로 중요한 가치가 있다. 이에 여러 분야의 연구를 통 해 이 영화의 다층적 의미가 규명되었지만 영화 속 자폐성 장애인 재현에 대한 예각화된 분석과 총체적 평가는 미비했다. 본고는 문화 연구와 장애 학을 기반으로 한 융복합 연구를 통해, <말아톤>의 주요 언어와 영상 표 현, 서사의 의미를 심층적으로 분석하고 <말아톤>에 재현된 자폐성 장애 인의 의미를 비판적으로 고찰하여 영화와 현실에서 자폐성 장애인이 배 제되지 않는 사회를 만들기 위해 개선해야 할 과제를 밝히는 것을 그 목 표로 한다. 연구결과 영화 <말아톤>은 자폐성 장애에 대한 이항대립적 오해를 바로잡고 장애인 인식 개선의 긍정적인 역할을 하고 있으며, 장애 인과 비장애인의 동반 성장 서사를 통해 장애인의 자기결정권과 사회구 성원으로서의 소통을 의미 있게 재현해 내고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 여 전히 영화와 현실에서 발견되는 한계와 과제들이 있다. 자폐성 장애인을 지나치게 순수하거나 탁월한 존재로 묘사하거나 통합교육, 직업재활을 통한 자립에 대한 이해가 부족하다는 한계를 드러내고 있다. 또한 개인적 사회화를 넘어선 사회통합도 과제로 남는다.
