This study considers how we should think about the issues of Japanese military “comfort women.” To this end, my study suggests that the narrative of Japanese military “comfort women” is not actively unfolding in the field of novels, and analyzes the stereotypes and limitations of that narrative. At this time, the main analysis focuses on Kim Sum’s novels about “comfort women.” In other words, this paper aims to criticize the set pattern of representation of the existing Japanese military “comfort women” narrative through Kim's novel's and to study the ethics of representation surrounding this problem. I posit that the problem of the reappearance of Japanese military “comfort women” oppresses “imagination” because of the emotional burden of the writer. I also argue that the range of “imagination” allowed regarding Japanese military “comfort women” is limited under a nationalist perspective, and resulting in emphasis on the dichotomy between good and evil and the repetition of stereotyped images of the victims. From this I conclude that issue of Japanese military “comfort women” is a matter that needs to be discussed on a global scale, rather than limited to a nationalist discourse, and it should be considered in the first place in our society. I propose a wide range of reasons for our society on the issue by presenting a novel possibility of the problem of representation by the Japanese military “comfort women” victims.

본고는 일본군 ‘위안부’ 문제를 둘러싼 갈등이 지속되는 현 시점에서, 오늘날 우리가 해당 문제를 어떻게 사유해야 할 것인가를 질문하고 있다. 이를 위해 ‘왜’ 유독 소설 분야에서 해당 서사가 활발하게 전개되지 않고 있는지를 조명하고, 해당 서사가 지닌 정형성과 그 한계를 분석하였다. 이 때 주 분석 대상은 김숨의 일본군 ‘위안부’ 관련 소설들이다. 즉, 본 논문 은 김숨의 작품을 통해 기존의 일본군 ‘위안부’서사가 지닌 재현의 정형성 을 비판하고, 해당 문제를 둘러싼 재현의 윤리를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 삼는다. 구체적인 본론에서는 일본군 ‘위안부’ 재현이 갖는 작가로서의 부담이 해당 서사에 관한 소설적 상상을 억압하고 있음을 서술하였다. 언어로 표현될 수 없는 피해자들의 고통을 서사화해야한다는 작가의 부담이 피해 자의 증언을 증명하는 결과로 이어지고, 그 결과 소설적 ‘상상’이 규제되 는 문제가 발생했다고 본 것이다. 또한 해당 문제에 관해 허용된 ‘상상’의 범위가 민족주의적 관점 아래 제한됨으로써, 선과 악의 이분법이 강조되 고 피해 여성들의 정형화된 이미지만이 반복된다는 문제도 지적하였다. 이러한 분석은 일본군 ‘위안부’ 문제가 민족주의적 담론을 벗어나 전지구 적 차원에서 논의되어야 할 사안이자, 우리 내부에서 우선적으로 반성되 어야 할 문제임을 확인하게 해주었다. 우리는 문학을 통해 소멸해가는 기억들을 복원하고, 경험할 수 없는 시 간을 공유해 나간다. 따라서 본 논문은 일본군 ‘위안부’ 피해자들의 재현 문제에 관한 소설적 가능성을 제시함으로써, 해당 문제에 관한 우리 사회 의 폭넓은 사유를 제안한다는 점에서 분명한 의의를 갖는다.
