This article was designed to take a look at the plays that appeared through the Chosun Ilbo spring literary contest in the 1950s from the perspective of modern dramas. The spring literary contests run by magazines and newspapers were suspended before liberation and resumed by the late 1950s. At that time there were many social and cultural changes due to the influence of American culture. Perhaps due to this influence, the plays featured in the Chosun Ilbo spring literary contest mainly dealt with the problems of women's sex, flaws in modern values, and negative humanity. The potential of modern drama is manifested in formal experiments commensurate with changed perception of the world. These include the use of non-single plots, symbolic dialogues, and symbolic stages. However, this experimental nature cannot be said to have been fully passed on to newspaper readers. This can be seen through the illustrations that accompanied the text. The illustrations were used to help readers understand or attract attention rather than to show the formal features of the play.

본고는 1950년대 조선일보 신춘문예를 통해 등단한 희곡 작품을 현대극 의 관점에서 살펴보기 위해 기획되었다. 해방 이전에 중단되었던 신춘문 예는 1950년대 후반에 이르러 재개되었다. 당시는 미국 문화의 영향으로 사회･문화적인 변화가 크게 나타났던 시기이다. 이러한 영향 때문인지 조 선일보 신춘문예를 통해 등장한 희곡 작품들은 여성의 성(性)문제와 근대 가치의 결점 및 부정적 인간성의 문제를 주로 다루고 있었다. 현대극으로서의 가능성은 변화한 세계 인식에 걸맞은 형식적 실험에서 나타난다. 단일하지 않은 플롯의 사용, 상징적인 대사의 처리, 그리고 상 징적인 무대의 활용 등이 이에 속한다. 그러나 이러한 실험성이 신문 독 자에게 완전히 전해졌다고 볼 수는 없다. 이는 텍스트와 함께 실린 삽화 를 통해서 확인할 수 있다. 삽화는 희곡 작품의 형식적 특징을 보여주기 보다는 독자의 이해를 돕거나 관심을 끄는 데 어울리도록 활용되었다.
