This paper will examine the debate on the internality and externality of humanity (ren) and rightness (yi) by focusing on the moral characteristics of humanity and rightness. This debate captured by the Mencian perspective has finally been planned to establish his Discourse that Human Nature is Morally Good. However, it is hard to accept that Gaozi fully agrees with the Mencian view of human nature. If Gaozi does not revise his stance on the internality and externality and Mencius holds on to his view that both humanity and rightness are internal, then the starting point to revisit the debate should be how to figure out the moral characteristics of humanity and rightness. If they have different ideas of humanity and rightness in mind, each of their arguments has its own validity. Such a validity leads them to take different stance on moral norms, which are based on different meta-ethical understandings. In chapter 2, I will analyze chapter 6A4 of Mencius in terms of facts, value, and reasons for action. In chapter 3, I will examine how to explain sorting humanity and rightness into the internal and the external in terms of reasons for action. In chapter 4, I will argue how Mencius and Gaozi have different understandings of humanity and rightness in accordance with the concepts of human nature (xing), which contemporaries of Mencius have had. Finally, I can conclude what I have argued so far as follows. Gaozi has a different understanding of humanity from that of rightness. Mencius and Gaozi may have similar views of humanity in its germinal stage, but different ideas of it in its final stage. They have totally different conceptions of rightness. Such conclusions will be a cornerstone to grasp the meta-ethical topology of various schools including Xunzi in pre-Qin China.

이 글은 ‘인의’의 성격적 특성에 주목해 『맹자』의 인내의외 논쟁을 검토한다. 맹자의 관점에서 바라본 논쟁은 궁극적으로 자신의 성선론을 정립하기 위해 기획되 었겠지만, 고자가 그에 온전하게 동의했으리라고 보기는 어렵다. 예컨대, 고자가 ‘인내의외’ 주장을 수정하지 않았고, 맹자는 ‘인의’가 모두 내재한다는 주장을 견지 했다는 전제를 바탕으로 논쟁의 주제들을 다시 검토할 때 우리가 주목해야 할 출발 점 가운데 하나는 ‘인의’의 성격에 관한 문제가 될 수 있다. 서로가 염두에 둔 ‘인의’ 관념이 달랐다면 그들의 주장은 나름의 타당성을 각각 갖기 때문이다. 각자의 타당 성은 그들이 서로 다른 메타윤리학적 이해를 바탕으로 도덕적 행위 규범도 다르게 받아들였다고 주장할 근거가 된다. 2장에서 나는 사실과 당위, 행위 이유의 관점에 서 ｢고자｣4장을 분석할 예정이다. 3장에서는 ‘인의’를 안과 밖으로 나누는 것이 행 위의 이유 관점에서 어떻게 설명될 수 있는지 검토한다. 행위의 이유라는 점에 주 목, 버나드 윌리엄스의 동기에 관한 ‘내재적-외재적’ 이유 논의를 차용해 설명할 예정이다. 4장에서는 ‘성’ 개념에 대한 맹자 당대의 이해에서 출발, 맹자와 고자가 ‘인’과 ‘의’에 관하여 어떻게 다른 입장의 차이를 보이는지 논하고자 한다. 이런 분 석을 통해 나는 첫째, 고자에게서는 ‘인’과 ‘의’가 다른 내용을 갖는다는 점, 둘째, 맹 자와 고자의 ‘인’ 관념은 그 발아 단계에서는 같을 수 있으나 최종 결실에서는 다르 다는 점, 셋째, 둘은 전혀 다른 ‘의’ 관념을 가진다는 점을 확인할 수 있다. 이런 확인 은 이후 순자를 비롯 선진의 여러 학파들의 메타윤리적 지형을 파악하는 노둣돌이 되리라 기대한다.
