As of yet, few studies have investigated the case of Korean diaspora in Austria. The three-year research reported in this paper is the first study on Korean transnational families living in a German-speaking country. The paper focuses on South Korean members of the Wiener Saengerknaben and their families. In this paper, ‘narrative inquiry’ is used not only as methodology but also as a way to better understand the experiences told by the participants. This case study reports on three main issues: (1) how Korean boys have come to form a substantial part of the choir; (2) what basic factors contribute to the families’ decision to live physically separated between the two countries, Austria and South Korea; and (3) which characteristic features of Korean people conduce to such decision. Based on in-depth interviews with alumni and parents, this study has discovered several components of Koreanness – vague confidence, improvisation, dynamism, positive illusions and unrealistic optimism – to play important roles in making the decision. I argue that the Koreanness, as characterized in this paper, serves to be a guiding principle for Korean people’s thinking and behavior. In a broader context, the famous Vienna choir school functions as a provider of overseas education for young Korean boys. The school can be viewed as a good opportunity for Korean child-centered families, who are tied to the Korean education fever. In sum, this is a case study of, and thus qualitative research on, Korean transnational families in Vienna, examining critical aspects of how Koreans use available means to provide overseas education to their children.

유럽의 오스트리아는 한인 디아스포라 연구는 물론, 초국적 가족을 대상으로 하는 연구가 미비한 연구 소외 지역이다. 그러한 의미에서 3년간 질적 연구로 진행된 본 연구는 비영어권 국가 지역인 독일어권으로 연구 지경을 넓히는 시작이 되었다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 본 연구의 대상은 오스트리아 빈소년합창단 한국인 단원들과 그 가족이며, 연구참여자들의 동의를 얻어 심층 면접을 하였다. 내러티브 탐구는 본 연구의 방법이면서 연구참여자들의 경험을 이해하는 과정이다. 연구내용으로는 첫째, 한국 청소년들의 빈소년합창단 입단 과정 둘째, 단원들의 가족이 한국과 오스트리아로 나뉘어 초국적 생활을 하게 된 배경과 특징 셋째, 초국적 경험이 없는데도 오스트리아로 이주를 결정하는 과정에서 기저로 작용한 한국성을 살펴보았다. 이주 결정에는 막연한 자신감, 즉흥성 및 역동성, 긍정적 환상, 비현실적 낙관성 등이 작용한 것으로 확인되었다. 넓은 의미에서 빈소년합창단의 한국 공연은 합창단원이 되고 싶어 하는 아이와 내 아이가 잘할 수 있으리라 믿는 부모에게 조기 유학의 계기를 제공했다고 할 수 있다. 높은 교육열과 자녀 중심 가족들이 이 기회를 놓치지 않으려고 유학 국가에 대한 사전 준비가 부족한 상태에서 초국적 가족이 되었다. 이로 인해 직면하게 되는 유학 및 이주의 어려움을 내러티브를 통해 조명했다.
