This study examined the discussion method of reading classics for adults to practice liberal education. To this end, studies concerning the various discussion methods of reading classics in Korea as well as the “Great Books Program” used in the U.S. were researched. Then the goal of book discussion for adults’ liberal education was set, which are active participation of individuals, better understanding of classical texts, and development of critical perspectives. Research tasks for this study are how to improve text-based understanding and encourage active participation and interactions, which are effective discussion methods of reading classics concluded from a close analysis of the literature review. In order to implement these research tasks, more specific discussion methods were developed in the context of a real situation. The specific procedure is as follows: sharing feelings, sharing sentences, questions and text-driven discussions, critical thinking and finding essential meaning, and share appreciation and meta-talk. It is considered that the participants in this study were able to clearly prepare for the changing era with rational wisdom after they experienced diverse perspectives and gained an in-depth understanding of classics.

본 연구에서는 교양교육의 실천으로서 일반성인을 위한 고전독서토론의 방법에 대하여 탐색하였다. 이를 위하여 성인대상의 고전독서토론 방법에 대한 국내 선행연구와 미국의 ｢위대한 저서 읽기 프로그 램｣을 살펴보았으며, 이러한 과정에서 교양교육으로서 고전독서토론의 목표를 개인의 능동적인 참여와 고전텍스트의 이해를 높이고 비판적 시각을 키우기 위한 것으로 설정하였다. 이에 대한 연구과제로는 선행연구자료 분석을 통하여 도출된 효과적인 고전독서토론의 방법인 텍스트 중심의 이해와 참가자의 능동적인 질문과 교류가 이루어질 수 있도록 하는 것이며, 이러한 연구 과제를 충족하기 위하여 실제 고전독서토론의 과정을 진행하면서 구체적인 방법의 개발을 진행하였다. 그 결과 도출된 세부과정의 순서는 ‘느낌 나누기’, ‘문장 공유하기’, ‘질문과 텍스트 중심의 토론’, ‘비판적 사고와 본질적 의미 도출’, ‘소감 나누기와 메타 대화’이다. 연구결과의 적용에 있어 교양교육으로서 고전독서토론의 참가자들은 텍스트에 대한 다양한 시각을 경험하는 과정과 깊이 있는 이해를 체득하면서 이성적 지혜를 가지고 변화하는 시대를 의연하게 대비할 수 있는 역량을 가지게 됨을 확인하였다.
