The purpose of this study was to examine the needs for competence-based liberal arts education among South Korean undergraduates in I-University. Using the modified version of the Liberal Arts Competence Scale, a survey was conducted involving 560 college students, all of whom have taken liberal arts classes from a university located in the city of Incheon. The questionnaire asked participants to state their current performance level (what is) and the level that they believed it important to actually be at (what should be) regarding their liberal arts competence. The gap between the performance level and the importance level was examined using a t-test. Then, this study conducted IPA matrix analysis, and Borich's Need Analysis to determine the priorities of the educational needs regarding liberal arts competence. The results showed that performance levels of participating students were lower than the importance levels in all of the 9 liberal arts competence areas, with statistically significant differences being seen except in the areas of Cooperation and Reflection. Second, among the 9 competence areas, 'Self-recognition' was ranked first in educational needs, followed by Expression (2nd), Self-regulation (3rd), Creative and Convergent Thinking (4th), and finally Co-existence (5th). These results provide systematic analyses on students' educational needs for liberal arts competence. The current study suggests that we should consider improving and developing the highly ranked liberal arts competence areas, along with the methods used in competence-based liberal arts education.

본 연구의 목적은 역량기반 교양교육에 관한 국내 대학생의 교육요구도를 분석하는 것이다. 인천 소재의 한 대학에서 교양교육 이수 경험이 있는 560명의 학부생을 대상으로 교육요구도 조사에 적합하게 수정된 교양역량 진단도구를 활용하여 설문조사를 실시하였다. 연구 참여자들은 9개의 교양역량을 측정하는 각 문항에 대하여 보유수준과 중요수준으로 구분하여 응답하였다. 먼저 교양역량 보유수준과 중요수준의 차이를 t분석을 통하여 알아보았다. 다음으로 IPA 매트릭스 분석과 Borich의 교육요구도 분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 학생들이 인식한 교양역량의 보유도는 중요도보다 낮았으며, 두 수준 간의 차이는 자기반성과 협업 두 영역을 제외하고는 모두 통계적으로 유의하였다. 둘째, 교양교육 영역 중 교육 요구도가 가장 높은 영역은 ‘자기인식’이었고 ‘자기표현’이 2순위, ‘자기규제’가 3순위, ‘창의⋅융합적 사고’가 4순위, 그리고 공존이 5순위로 도출되었다. 본 연구는 역량기반 교양교육에 관한 학습자의 요구를 체계적으로 보여주고 있으며 교육 요구도가 높은 자기인식, 표현, 자기규제 영역은 역량기반 교양교육의 내용 및 방법의 개선과 개발에서 우선적으로 고려될 필요가 있음을 시사한다.
