This study was a case study about aspect of the physical education classes taught by elementary school teachers. The purpose of this study was to elicit a cultural meaning from investigating participants’ teaching style based on their faith on ideal physical education. Non-participant observation, memo and individual in-depth interviews were used to collect data. Data analysis was conducted with the domain analysis and taxonomic analysis proposed by Spradly(2016). We derived the concept from reading the interview data repeatedly and categorizing each part organically. In order to ensure the authenticity of the data, we utilized member checks and peer-debriefing. In this study, participants’ faith and value toward the physical education were classified into either subject comprehensive aspect and subject inherent aspect. We also noticed these faith were crucial factors for teachers in deciding what and how to teach their classes. The significance of this study is that it highlights the relations between comprehensive aspect and inherent aspect, and suggests categorizing physical education classes based on each teacher’s own faith and value toward physical education.

본 연구는 초등교사의 체육수업 운영 모습에 대한 사례연구이다. 본 연구에서는 연구참여자들이 생각하는 체육수업 에 대한 신념과 그에 따른 수업 운영 사례를 살펴보고 문화적 의미를 도출하고자 하였다. 자료수집은 비참여관찰과 메모, 심층면담을 활용하였다. 자료분석은 Spradley(2016)가 제안한 영역 분석과 분류 분석을 활용하였다. 면담 자 료를 반복적으로 읽으면서 개념을 도출하고, 각각의 개념을 유기적으로 연결하여 범주화, 주제화하였으며 자료의 진실성을 확보하기 위해 구성원 검토, 동료 참고인과 협의 과정을 거쳤다. 본 연구에서 체육수업의 신념과 가치는 교과 포괄적인 측면과 교과 고유의 측면으로 분류되었다. 이러한 신념과 가치는 수업 내용과 방법을 결정하는 중요 한 요소로 작용하였는데 학습과제 선정의 주요 매개체, 학습과제 선정 시 고려요소 등을 포함하고 있었다. 본 연구 는 교과 포괄적 신념과 교과 고유의 신념 사이의 관계를 조명하였으며, 체육수업의 신념과 가치에 따라 수업 준비 사례에 대한 의미를 부여하고, 좋은 체육 수업 판별에 관한 새로운 접근을 시도하였다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.
