The status of religious organizations is formed by the combination of various factors such as the religious nature of members of society, the distribution of religion, the historical nature of religion, cultural leadership, spiritual influence and social activities. In Korean society, the Jogye Order gained today's status with the accumulation of various social evaluations and reputations. The Jogye Order inherits the 1,700-year-old tradition of Korean Buddhism and holds various cultural assets. The Jogye Order has such status and capabilities because it was legally recognized as the nation's only Buddhist sect when the integrated sect was launched in 1962. The launch of the integrated sect has led to a renewal of the Buddhist meditation climate. It was also a landmark event in which Buddhist conflicts that had continued since Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial rule were resolved and harmonized. This incident allowed the Jogye Order to be recognized as the only sect in the Buddhist community. And all traditional temples and cultural heritages across the country could be inherited by the Jogye Order. They are inherited various cultural assets from the Silla Dynasty, as well as traditions such as discipline mediation and wisdom. In the future, Buddhism must respond to artificial intelligence and robot-oriented changes, and seek innovative religious roles that are different from those of today. If artificial intelligence is applied to Buddhism, the vast scriptures are all accumulated in data and can be searched very easily. Each temple can build a new foundation for missionary work by providing cultural experiences and counseling, temple food, tea and dialogue services with monks. Therefore, it is time to mobilize all the assets, status and capabilities that the Jogye Order currently has to seek a new religious role in a future society that is replaced by Artificial Intelligence and Robots.

종교조직의 위상은 사회 구성원의 종교성, 종교 분포, 종교의 역사성, 문화 지도력, 정신적 영향력, 사회적 활동 등과 같은 여러 가지 요인들이 결합하여 형성된다. 한국사회에서 조계종단은 다양한 사회적 평가와 평판이 축적되면서 오늘의 위상을 갖추게 되었다. 조계종단은 1700여년에 달하는 한국불교의 전통을 계승하고, 다양한 문화자산을 보유하고 있다. 조계종단이 이와 같은 위상과 역량을 갖게 된 것은 1962년 통합종단이 출범하면서 법적으로 우리나라의 유일한 불교종단으로 인정받았기 때문이다. 통합종단 출범은 수행풍토를 쇄신하고, 광복이후 지속되었던 불교계의 갈등을 정리하고 화합을 일군 획기적인 사건이었다. 이러한 사건으로 인해 조계종단은 불교계의 유일한 종단으로 인정받을 수 있었다. 그리고 전국의 모든 전통사찰과 문화유산들을 그대로 물려받을 수 있게 되었다. 신라시대부터 이어온 구산선문의 수행문화와 비롯하여 교학체계, 율장정신 등 계정혜 삼학의 전통은 대한불교조계종단으로 계승되었다. 향후 불교는 인공지능과 로봇이 보편화된 변화에 대응하여야 하며, 현재와는 다른 혁신적인 종교적 역할을 모색해야 한다. 인공지능이 불교에 적용된다면 방대한 경전이 모두 데이터로 축적되고 매우 쉽게 검색할 수 있다. 각 사찰에서는 문화체험과 상담, 사찰음식과 차, 그리고 수행자와의 대화 서비스를 제공함으로써 새로운 포교기반을 구축할 수 있다. 따라서 현재 조계종단이 가지고 있는 자산과 위상, 그리고 역량을 총동원해서 인공지능과 로봇으로 대체되는 미래사회에서 새로운 종교적 역할을 모색해야 할 때이다.
