Korean literature translation is very important for a general reader who can not read an original text as well as a writer who wants to attract a much wider readership. A Korean-English translation activation for Korean literature and a big success of translations in English speaking countries overtly depend on translators. Despite the criticality of them, their status falls far of our expectations. The aim of this study is to provide a beginning of raising a translator's status based on hermeneutics. To do this, this paper looks at precedent studies on Korean-English literature translations and translators, and discusses the discretion of translators as an interpreter who interprets a text on the basis of Gadamer's Philosophical Analytical Theory.

문학번역은 원전을 읽을 수 없는 독자뿐만 아니라 번역을 통해 독자층이 확대되는 긍정적인 측면에서 원저자에게도 중요하다. 한국 문학작품의 영어번역 활성화와 더 나아가 영어권 시장에서의 성공을 추구하기 위해 번역은 전적으로 번역가에 의존하지만 그 중요성과 역량에 비하면 번역과 번역가의 위상은 그 역할에 미치지 못하고 있다. 본 연구는 창조적 예술가로서의 번역가의 위상을 제고하기 위한 학문적 단초를 제공하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 한영문학번역 및 번역가에 대한 선행 연구를 살펴보고, 가다머의 철학적 해석학(hermeneutics) 이론을 바탕으로 해석학적 입장에서 텍스트를 해석하는 해석가로서의 번역가로 그 재량을 논의한다.
