As the educational importance and justification of death education is spreading, research on various subjects of death education has been conducted in Korea, but there is no research related to death education for pre-teachers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore pre-teachers’ perception of death and their needs for death education as preliminary study for the development of death education suitable for pre-teachers. For the study, in-depth interviews were conducted with 14 students at college of education of a four-year university in Seoul, and thematic analysis was performed based on phenomenological experience factors. As a result of the study, the researchers confirmed that pre-teachers’ death awareness have shifted from the negative feeling to an important meaning integrated in their lives through an in-depth interview process. Starting from this transition, they gave very specific and in-depth answers regarding the expectations and needs of death education. It is expected that the results of this study, which contain their in-depth and creative ideas and suggestions, will be useful materials for effective development and implementation of death education for pre-teachers.

죽음교육의 교육적 중요성과 당위성이 확산되면서 우리나라에서도 다양한 연구대상자들에 대한 연구가 진행되고 있지만, 예비교사 대상의 죽음교육 관련 연구는 전무하다. 이에 본 연 구는 향후 예비교사들에게 적합한 죽음교육 프로그램 개발을 위한 기초연구로서, 이들의 죽 음에 대한 인식과 죽음교육 요구를 심층적으로 탐색하는 것이 이 연구의 목적이다. 연구를 위해 서울 소재 4년제 대학교인 A대학의 사범대 학생 14명을 대상으로 ‘반구조화 면담(semi-structured interview)’을 진행하였고, 현상학적 체험 요소를 기반으로 주제분석을 수행하였다. 연구결과, 면담 초반에는 참여자들이 죽음에 대해 기피하고 싶은 부정적 느낌만을 가지고 있었으나 좋은 죽음과 죽음 준비에 대한 질문을 기점으로 하여 죽음을 삶 속에 통합된 중요 한 의미로 전환하는 것을 확인하였다. 이러한 전환을 기점으로 참여자들은 예비교사답게 죽 음교육 프로그램의 기대와 요구에 대해서도 매우 구체적이고 깊이 있는 답변을 해주었다. 이 들의 깊이 있고 창의적인 아이디어와 제안을 담은 본 연구결과가 향후 예비교사들을 위한 죽 음교육 프로그램의 효과적인 개발 및 실행에 유용한 자료가 될 것으로 기대한다.
