This study suggests that the strategic behavior of the CEO is influenced by the individual's regulatory focus by Higgins (1997), and consists of two strategic directions: promotion focus and prevention focus. Using the survey data of senior executives of 198 companies of innovative SMEs in Busan's Gyeongnam region, we tried to find the causal relationship between mediation focus and exploration activities and exploitation and corporate performance. Meanwhile, through the target similarity model, we tried to find the differentiation of the study by dividing it into a model of innovative performance dimension and a model of financial performance dimension and verifying the size of the differential mediating effect. The results of the study show that the relationship leading to promotion focus-exploration-innovative performance is better than the promotion focus-exploitation-innovative performance and that the relationship between prevention focus-exploitation-financial performance is superior to prevention focus-exploration-financial performance. . The implication of the study is that in order to increase the innovative performance of the company, it can be seen that when the promotion focus is connected to exploration activities among the CEO's regulatory focus theory, the probability of achievement is higher. In particular, it can be seen that the effect of innovative performance increases when the propensity of promotion focus among the CEO's regulatory focus theory is linked to a long-term technology exploration strategy. On the other hand, in order to improve the financial performance of the company, it was found that the financial performance increases when the prevention focus is linked to exploitation activities.

본 연구에서는 Higgins (1997)의 연구인 조절초점이론을 통해 CEO의 전략적 행동이 개인의 조절초점에 영향을 받는다고 제안하며, 촉진초점과 예방초점이라는 두 가지 전략적 방향으로 구 성하여. 부산 경남지역의 혁신형 중소기업의 198개 회사의 고위 임원들의 설문 조사 데이터를 사용하여, 조절초점과 탐험활동 및 활용의 매개관계 및 기업성과의 인과관계를 찾으려고 하였 다. 한편 여기에 대상유사성 모델을 통하여, 혁신성과차원의 모형과 재무성과차원의 모형으로 구분하고 차별적인 매개효과의 크기를 검증하여 연구의 차별성을 찾고자 하였다. 연구결과는 촉진초점-탐험-혁신성과로 이어지는 관계가 촉진초점-활용-혁신성과보다 더 우 수하다는 것과 예방초점-활용-재무성과의 관계가 예방초점-탐험-재무성과보다 우수하다는 것을 보여주고 있다. 연구의 시사점은 기업의 혁신성과를 높이기 위해서는 CEO의 조절초점이론 중 촉진초점이 탐험활동으로 연결되어질 때 그 달성가능성이 더 높아짐을 알 수 있다. 특히, 기업의 CEO의 조절초점이론 중 촉진초점의 성향이 장기적인 기술 탐험전략과 연결될 때 혁신성과의 효과는 더 증대됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 한편, 기업의 재무성과를 높이기 위해서는 예방초점이 활용활동 으로 연결될 때 재무성과가 증가하는 것을 알 수 있었다.
