Since the end of the Cold War and rapid globalization and technical developments, terrorist groups actively involved in criminal activities. Also criminal entrepreneurs became a major financial revenue for these terrorists groups. This newly patternized activities among terrorist groups is now called as Crime-Terror Nexus" indicating the changing nature of terrorism, which means two traditionally separate phenomena, crime and terrorism, became more similar. This new pattern of terrorism is considered to create synergy for the criminal organizations and terrorist groups, scholars believe that it would become a significant threat to the security of world community in the near future. Although the phenomenon of this crime-terror nexus is significant and imminent threats, there is lack of studies investigation this new evolution of terrorism with empirical data. Moreover there is literally no studies exploring factors relevant to the Crime-Terror Nexus. Therefore, this current study aims to conduct explorative investigation of factors affecting the ʻCrime-Terror Nexusʼ with a world terrorism data, MAROB(the Minorities at Risk Organizational Behavior), which is developed by START and Minority at Risk project and contains information terrorist groups in Middle-East and Africa region. Considering the significance of this new terrorism patterns and the challenging nature of conducting empirical studies on this topic, this study has great contribution on the development in the field of criminal justice as well as terrorism.

최근 들어 테러단체들의 범죄활동을 소위 ʻ테러와 범죄와의 결합현상(the Crime-Terror Nexus)ʼ라고 명명하고 있다. 이 현상은 테러집단들이 새로운 변화에 발맞추어 진화되고 있는 테러리즘의 새 패러다임을 일컫는 개념이다. 즉, 서로 다른 배타적인 성격과 영역에 있다고 여겨졌던, 범죄 집단과 테러집단이 연합하거나 또는 두 집단이 하나의 집단의 속성 을 띄도록 서로 수렴되고 있는 전이(transformation)현상을 나타내는 것으로 이해되고 있다. 이와 같은 현상이 주목받아야 할 이유는 두 집단의 속성이 서로 합쳐져 하나의 시너지 효과를 내면서 이전의 테러활동의 수준을 벗어난 국제질서와 안보의 큰 위협이 되고 있기 때문이다. 이 연구는 중동과 아프리카지역의 테러단체에 대한 정보를 담고 있는 START center와 Minority at Risk 프로젝트의 MAROB(the Minorities at Risk Organizational Behavior) 데이터를 사용하여 테러의 새로운 진화 현상에 영향을 미치는 요인들을 탐색적으로 분석 하기 위한 경험적 연구를 수행하였다. 테러와 범죄의 결합현상이 가까운 미래에 가져올 위협과 문제점들이 있으나 이에 대한 연구의 부족과, 테러에 관련된 경험적 연구의 수행의 어려움 등을 고려해 볼 때, 이 연구는 테러리즘에 관련된 학문적 영역 모두에서 매우 큰 공헌점이 있다고 할 것이다.
