Chinese involvement in Africa has attracted both support and opposition from different segments of African society including; politicians, policy makers and ordinary citizens. This study examines politicization of Chinese involvement in Africa as means to mobilize political support during presidential election campaigns. It analyzes how and why during a presidential election campaigns there was popular support towards Chinese involvement in one case, as opposed to anti-Chinese sentiments in another. The study finds politicians’ support to Chinese involvement or opposition in form of anti-Chinese rhetoric is determined by how ordinary citizens have been affected by Chinese involvement in a given country. In a condition where Chinese involvement has positively impacted general citizens’ life, citizens have had positive attitude towards Chinese role. It is on this basis of citizens’ positive attitudes towards Chinese involvement that correspondingly influences politician’s popular support towards Chinese role in Africa. The opposite is true where Chinese role has had negative consequences on a local population. Therefore, politicization and spread of anti-Chinese sentiments is as a result of negative consequences of Chinese involvement on ordinary citizens in Africa.

중국의 아프리카 연루는 아프리카 사회로부터 강한 지지와 반감을 동시에 불러일으키고 있다. 이 글은 대통령 선거 기간 정치적 지지를 확보하기 위해 중국의 연루를 찬성과 반대의 두 극단으로 정치화시 키는 국가의 사례를 분석하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 그 결과 중국 의 지원을 받는 케냐와 잠비아에서 대통령 후보들이 자국 국민의 대 중국 감정을 서로 상반된 목적으로 활용하고 있음을 발견했다. 구체 적으로 중국의 지원이 시민의 삶을 개선시키는 케냐에서는 정치지도 자들이 중국의 역할을 긍정적인 차원에서 적극적으로 활용하는 반면 잠비아의 야당 지도자들은 중국의 역할을 부정적으로 축소시키고 있 음을 발견했다.
