The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of the development and application of the expressive arts therapy program on enhancing self-expression and social skills of children with intellectual disabilities. The expressive arts therapy program was conducted from October 15, 2019, to December 6, 2019, twice a week, a total of 16 sessions. Twenty intellectually disabled children (level 3) were selected as subjects from special needs classes at an elementary school in Ulsan, consisting of a control group and an experimental group (ten children, respectively). The self-expression scale and social skills scale were tested before and after the expressive arts therapy program. The pre-post changes in the collected data were analyzed using a t-test in SPSS Statistics 20.0. The result of the study showed that expressive arts therapy had a significant effect on the improvement of self-expression and social skills of intellectually disabled children in special needs classes in elementary schools. Compared to the control group, the experimental group showed a significant difference in the pre- and post-statistical data, and the result of the experiment showed that the children with intellectual disabilities have increased their self-expression and improved their social skills. This indicated that expressive arts therapy is an effective psychological and emotional support measure that can be applied to special needs classes in elementary schools.

본 연구는 표현예술치료 프로그램 개발․적용이 지적장애 아동의 자기 표현력 신장과 사회성 증진에 미치는 효과를 알아보기 위한 것이다. 울산시에 소재한 초등학교 특수학급의 지적장애(3급) 아동 20명을 실험집단, 통제 집단으로 각각 10명씩 구성하여 2019년 10월 15일부터 12월 06일까지 주 2회, 총 16회기 동안 표현예술치료 프로그램을 실시하였다. 표현예술 심리치료 프로그램 전후로 자기 표현력 척도와 사회성 기술 척도를 실시하였고 수집된 자료는 SPSS 20.0 통계 프로그램에서 t-test를 사용하여 사전․사후 변화를 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 표현예술치료는 초등학교 특수학급 지적장애 아동들의 자기 표현력 신장과 사회성 증진에 유의한 효과를 나타냈다. 실험집단이 통제 집단에 비해 사전․사후 통계 결과에서 유의한 차이를 나타내었으며, 실험 결과 지적장애 아동들이 실험 전보다 자기표현력이 신장되었고 사회성이 증진되었다. 이는 표현예술치료가 초등학교 특수학급 수업 현장에 적용할 수 있는 효과적인 심리적․정서적 지원 방안임을 시사한다.
