Aspect is a grammatical category that displays the appearance of motion within a certain time domain. In Chinese, “了, 著, 過” is the representative aspectual mark. However, the aspect is not limited to these elements. The aspect can be observed from various angles, and there are various factors that reflect it. In this regard, 陳平 (1988) presented the Chinese complement as one of the factors reflecting the aspect, and 趙元 任 (2005[1968]) revealed that some components of the resulting complement lost the function of the complement and turned into a suffix that functions as an aspect. From this perspective, this paper intends to discuss the aspect function of the directive complement “Shang”. The directive complement “Shang” has various meanings such as 'attachment', 'existence', 'addition', 'achievement of goal', and 'entry into and beginning of a new state' as well as the meaning of directly indicating the space of 'above'. Based on the "Jiagu" shape(甲古文), the first perception of “Shang” in Chinese is “objects exist on the baseline”. Based on this, as a result of analyzing each meaning of “Shang”, the concept of two-dimensional space such as “baseline” is metaphorized into three-dimensional space concept, and further, into “goal” and “new situation”. On the other hand, the complement “Shang” implies the event which is “moving upwards,” and the “state of arrival” of events is foregrounded and focused. The structure and focus of this event are metaphorically meaning 'to reach the end'. The meaning of 'end point' may mean 'target' or 'new state', and furthermore, it means 'end of event'. That is, it indicates the completion of the event indicated by the predicate, which can be interpreted as indicating the meaning of the aspect. Similarly, “up” in English also refers to the meaning of the aspect of ‘complete’ as well as the spatial meaning of ‘up’. This can be seen as reflecting the cross-linguistic phenomenon that is derived from the meaning of 'complete' as the metaphor of the space of 'above' is metaphorized.

상(相)은 일정한 시간 영역 안에서 동작의 모습을 표시하는 문법 범주이다. 중국어에 서는 동태조사 “了, 著, 過”가 대표적인 상(相)표지를 담당한다. 그러나 상(相)은 이와 같 은 국한된 요소로만 나타나는 것은 아니다. 상(相)은 다양한 각도에서 관찰될 수 있으며, 이를 반영하는 요소 또한 다양하게 존재한다. 이와 관련하여 陳平(1988)은 중국어의 보 어를 상(相)을 반영하는 요소 중 하나로 제시하였고, 趙元任(2005[1968])은 결과보어 중 일부 성분은 보어의 기능을 상실하고 상(相) 기능을 하는 접사(後綴)로 전환됨을 밝혔다. 본고는 이와 같은 관점에서 방향보어 “上”의 상(相) 기능에 대해서 논의하고자 한다. 방향보어 “上”은 ‘위’라는 공간을 직접 나타내는 의미를 비롯하여 ‘부착’, ‘존재’, ‘첨가’, ‘목표 달성’, ‘새로운 상태로의 진입 및 시작’이라는 다양한 의미항을 지니고 있다. 갑골 문 자형에 근거해 볼 때, 중국어에서 “上”에 대한 최초의 인식은 ‘물체가 기준 면 위에 존 재함’이다. 이를 바탕으로 보어 “上”의 각 의미를 도식화 하여 분석한 결과 “기준 면”과 같은 2차원적 공간 개념은 3차원적 공간 개념으로, 더 나아가 ‘목표’, ‘새로운 상황’과 같 은 추상적인 개념으로 은유됨을 확인할 수 있다. 한편, 보어 “上”은 ‘위로의 이동’이라는 사건의 추이를 내포하고 있으며, 일련의 사건 가운데 ‘위에 도착한 상태’가 전경화 되어 초점을 받는다. 이와 같은 사건 구조 및 초점은 ‘종점에 도달’이라는 의미로 은유된다. ‘종점’의 의미는 상술한 의미항 중 ‘목표’ 또는 ‘새로운 상태’라는 의미를 나타내기도 하 며, 더 나아가 ‘사건의 종점’이라는 의미를 나타내기도 한다. 즉 “上”은 서술어가 나타내 는 사건의 완료를 나타내게 되며, 이는 상(相) 의미를 나타내는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 비 슷한 예로 영어의 “up” 또한 ‘위’라는 공간의미를 비롯하여 ‘완료’의 상(相) 의미를 나타낸다. 이는 ‘위’라는 공간의가 은유되어 ‘완료’의 의미로 파생되어가는 범언어적인 현상 이 반영된 것으로 볼 수 있다.
