This study analyzed the old peoples' motivation for participation into lifelong learning in higher education and suggested a model to encourage participation by using the senior citizens' colleges. With the purpose of analyzing Korean old people's participation into higher education, the study selected institutions of lifelong education for old people in higher education as target organizations for observation, and represented the literature review in relation to old people's lifelong education. As a target group for analyzing attributes of participation by old people into lifelong learning, 20 people above 60 years old were selected, who were enrolled in lifelong education centers at universities or colleges. As the research methodology, a qualitative method was chosen and the collected data were analyzed on the basis of ground theory. As the result of in-depth interview, three attributes for old peoples' participation into lifelong education centers or higher education were found. The reasons why the target group for research participated in lifelong learning was, first, to suffice themselves psychologically, second, to escape from the feeling of isolation from the society, and third, to get help in their daily life

본 연구는 고등교육기관에서의 노인들의 평생교육 참여 동기를 분석하여 대학을 활용한 노인들의 교육 참여를 증진시킬 수 있는 모델을 제시하고자 하였다. 우리나라 노인들의 고등교육기관에의 교육 참여를 연구하기 위해 고등교육기관을 활용하여 실시되는 노인평생교육 기관을 살펴보고 노인들의 평생교육 참여 동기에 관한 선행연구를 고찰하였다. 노인학습자들의 학습참여 요인을 연구하기 위해 서울시 소재 대학교에 등록된 학생과 고등교육기관의 평생교육원에서 프로그램을 수강하고 있는 60세 이상의 노인 20명을 표본으로 하였다. 연구방법은 질적 연구방법을 사용하여 노인들에 대한 심층면접으로 이루어졌으며, 수집된 자료는 근거이론을 기반으로 분석되었다. 심층면접의 결과 노인들이 대학교육이나 대학의 평생교육원 프로그램에 참여하는 것은 다음과 같은 세 가지 요인으로 드러났다. 첫째, 연구대상자들이 고등교육기관의 평생교육에 참여하는 것은 자신의 심리적 만족감을 충족시키기 위해서였고, 둘째 소외감과 고립감으로부터 탈피하여 사회적 참여를 위한 방법으로 활용하려는 것이었으며, 마지막으로 일상생활에 도움을 받기 위해 참여하는 것으로 나타났다.
