Recently, Far-right extremism in Europe has been politicized beyond the level of individualistic or collective movements. Far-rightist has emerged as organized political forces. Even in South Korea, extreme voices associated with ideological and political camps collide with each other due to various domestic and international political issues. Thus, the South Korean society, like European counterpart, also needs to watch out the emerging extreme beliefs and forces based on exclusive chauvinism or ethnocentrism. The current study focuses on the trends of Far-right extremism in Europe in order to describe and understand the recent trend of such a socio-political phenomenon in Europe and, therefore, take a reference from it for the South Korean society. This study investigates the current picture of the increase of Far-right extremism in Europe and examines socio-political factors affecting on it. The recent increase of Far-right extremism appears broadly in various European countries. Such a phenomenon associates with the terrorism or hate-crime motivated by the Far-rightist ideology, the spread of political movement, and the increase of political support for popularist Far-rightist politicians and political parties. This phenomenon will not go away soon because it is entangled with economic difficulties, high unemployment, Muslim refugees, and Islamic extremist terrorism in Europe. On the contrary, the increase and persistence of Far-right extremism in Europe is anticipated over the coming years.

최근 들어 유럽 내의 극우극단주의 활동이 개인적·개별 집단적 단위의 증가와 확산을 뛰어넘어 정치세력화 하는 극우주의 정치운동으로 확산되고 있으며 극우극단주의 세력들이 유럽 내에서는 주 요 정치집단으로 등장하고 있다. 한편 국내에서도 일련의 국내외 정치적 이슈들로 인해 이념적, 정 치적 성향과 관련된 극단적 주장들의 충돌이나 사회, 정치적 대결구도가 고조되는 조짐이 나타난다. 이러한 흐름과 관련하여 유럽과 마찬가지로 우리사회도 역시 배타적 민족주의 또는 종족주의에 기 반을 둔 극단적 이념과 세력의 대두에 대해 경계해야할 필요가 제기된다. 이와 같은 상황에서 유럽 지역의 극우극단주의의 동향에 대한 연구는 필요하다. 이 연구는 이러한 요구에 부응하여 최근 유럽 지역에서 나타나고 있는 극우극단주의의 동향에 대해 서술하고 분석한다. 이 연구에서는 유럽지역에 서의 최근 극우극단주의 증대의 실태를 살펴보고 그러한 증대에 영향을 미치는 사회정치적 요인들 에 대해 살펴보았다. 유럽지역에서의 최근 극우극단주의 증대는 유럽 국가들 전반에서 나타나고 있 는 현상이다. 이러한 현상은 극우극단주의 테러나 범죄와 함께 극우극단주의 운동의 확산과 포퓰리 즘적 극우주의 정치인과 정당의 지지율 증대 등과 함께 나타나고 있다. 이러한 현상은 최근 유럽지 역에서의 경제적 침체와 실업문제, 그리고 점증하는 이슬람 난민문제와 이슬람 극단주의 테러리즘의 위협 등과 서로 증식작용을 하는 상호작용의 연계 고리를 구축하고 있기 때문에 짧은 시기에 문제 가 사라지거나 감소될 것 같지는 않다. 오히려 극우극단주의 운동과 극우극단주의 정치세력의 득세, 그리고 극우극단주의 테러리즘이나 범죄 위협의 증대 또는 지속이 예견된다.
