This qualitative study was designed to investigate and further understand student athletic life and to consider institutional support for student-athletes. For student-athletes, the balance of their lives as students and their lives as athletes has not been easy to maintain because student-athletes often identify more with their athletic roles than with their academic roles, and thus result in role conflicts. However, some faculty members gave student-athletes special consideration regarding their GPAs to fulfill their roles as athletes. This special consideration has created a virtuous cycle within sports but has also generated a vicious cycle within academics. The student-athletes’new career exploration begins when they are finished with their sports. This knowledge can be helpful as a reference for student affairs professionals and faculty members who are willing to develop college retention and successful programs for minority college students.

이 연구는 학생 선수들의 학업과 운동 병행 경험이 의미하는 것은 무엇인지, 학생 선수들을 위한 대학교육서비스는 무엇을 고려해야 하는지를 살펴보고자 했다. 연구결과, 학생 선수들의 ‘학생으로서의 삶’과 ‘운동선수로서의 삶’은 두 삶의 우선순위가 이미 정해져있기 때문에 균형을 유지하기가 쉽지 않았으며 지속적인 갈등의 원인이 되었다. 학생 선수들은 운동선수로서의 역할을 충실히 수행할 수 있도록 교수로부터 ‘특별한 배려’를 제공받았다. 이러한 배려는 운동선수 입장에서 운동에 몰입할 수 있는 선순환이 되었지만 학업 수행에 있어서는 점점 낙오자가 되는 악순환이 되었다. 학생 선수들의 진로 여정은 생애주기로 이루어지는 것이 아닌 ‘운동’을 포기하는 순간 다음단계로 진행되었으며, 비로소 자신의 진로를 고민하는 진로탐색이 시작되었다. 이번 연구 결과는 대학 내 소수 그룹(체육 특기생)의 중도이탈을 막고 이들의 학생 성공을 기원하는 대학 구성원들에게 학문적 기초자료 및 정보를 제공해주었다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
