The purpose of this article is to explore the ways in which we might implement a more learner-oriented educational approach in regards to teaching poetry to university students by using the film Il Postino(1994). The reason why this article focused on Il Postino is that we believe that by watching this movie, students should not only be able to experience the life of a poet through the eyes of the young man depicted in the film, but to also derive a much better understanding of the poem Il Postino. In this article, we demonstrate that Il Postino can be used for poetry education in the following directions: first, students were tasked with analyzing Hwang Ji-woo’s poem Il Postino and Yoo Ha’s poem Il Postino based on the movie’s contents. As a result, the students then expressed their attempts to experience the life of the main character, and to understand, in three dimensions so to speak, the feelings of the various characters as they watched the protagonist’s death through Hwang Ji-woo’s poem. Interestingly, the students attempted to answer questions about the nature of the poem and the role of the poet, while figuring out the properties of the metaphor of Yoo Ha’s poem as presented in the film. Based on this experience, the students actually created a poem with only the title at the end of the movie. More specifically, students used metaphors and morphological expressions to attach various meanings to the sea when they focused on the changing process of the main character. Moreover, in the scenes wherein the main character tried to recite the poem, the students tried to give a socialistic meaning of the poem by using certain attributes of the sea. When such a specific understanding of text in literary education leads to the production of another text, learners become active learners, rather than passive.

이 글의 목적은 대학생을 대상으로 한 시 교양 교육에서 영화 『일 포스티노』(1994)를 활용하여 효율적인 학습전략을 모색하는 데 있다. 필자가 『일 포스티노』에 주목한 것은 시적 경험의 지평이 비교적 적은 학생들이 시 텍스트에 접근할 때 발생하는 문제점을 보완하기 위해서였다. 학생들은 영화에 서 시인으로 성장해가는 한 청년의 삶을 통해 시인의 삶을 추체험해볼 뿐만 아니라 메타포에 관한 이해를 바탕으로 시의 본질에 효과적으로 다가설 수 있기 때문이다. 이 글에서는 다음과 같은 방향으로 일 포스티노를 시 교양 교육에 활용할 수 있었다. 첫 번째로, 학생들이 영화를 시청한 뒤에 영화의 내용을 바탕으로 황지우의 시 ｢일 포스티노｣와 유하의 시 ｢일 포스티노―자전거의 노래를 들어라 3｣을 분석하도록 하였다. 황지우 시를 선정한 이유는 영화의 서사를 토대로 주인공의 죽음을 둘러싼 다른 인물의 시선을 읽어낼 수 있다는 점에서 시인의 삶을 추체험할 수 있기 때문이다. 실제로 학생들은 마리오의 죽음을 바라보는 네루다 시인의 감정뿐만 아니라 그에 감정이입을 한 황지우 시인의 상황까지 입체적으로 이해하려는 시도를 보여주었다. 유하 시를 선정한 이유는 영화의 소재를 토대로 은유의 속성을 파악하는 가운데 시의 본질과 시인의 역할에 관한 질문을 던질 수 있기 때문이다. 실제로 학생들은 “자전거의 길”에서 창조를 위해 고뇌하는 삶을 발견하거나 소외된 것을 포용하는 측면에서 시의 본질 및 시인의 역할을 읽어내고 있다. 이를 바탕으로 학생들은 영화 마지막에 제목만 등장하는 주인공의 시를 실제로 창작해봄으로써 읽기를 통해 획득한 시적 체험을 쓰기의 차원으로 내면화하고자 했다. 보다 구체적으로, 학생들은 주인공의 변화 과정에 초점을 맞춘 경우 여러 기법을 활용하여 ‘바다’에 다양한 의미를 부여하려 했으며, 주인공이 시를 낭독하려 했던 현장에 초점을 맞춘 경우 ‘바다’의 속성을 통해 사회주의적 메시지를 전달하려는 시도를 보여주었다. 이처럼 문학 교육에서 텍스트에 관한 구체적인 이해가 또 다른 텍스트의 생산으로 이어지게 될 때, 학습자는 보다 능동적인 주체의 위치에 서게 될 것이다.
