This study explores the mediating role of the clarity of children’s self-concept and of their emotional regulation on the relationship between parental psychological control and children’s life satisfaction. Fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade 398 Korean elementary school children in Gyeongssangnam-do rated the psychological control of their parents as well as the clarity of their own self-concept, emotional regulation, and life satisfaction. The results are as follows: first, parental psychological control was negatively related with the children’s life satisfaction, clarity of self-concept, and emotional regulation. Furthermore, the children’s clarity of self-concept and emotional regulation as mediating values were positively associated with their life satisfaction. Second, the study found a valid single mediating effect in that paternal psychological control affected children’s emotional regulation, which in turn influenced their life satisfaction. Moreover, the study found a significant dual mediating effect in that parental psychological control affected the clarity of the children’s self-concept, which in turn influenced emotional regulation, which eventually influenced life satisfaction. This study especially showed that the partial mediating model was a better model fit than the full mediating model. The result implies that parental psychological control indirectly influences children’s life satisfaction through their self-concept and emotional regulation instead of directly affecting the life satisfaction. This study contributes to the literature by emphasizing parental over proactive attitudes, such as psychological control, negatively influence the children/adolescents’ life satisfaction, in contrast with previous studies where the parental rejective attitude and the lack of affection are only considered as parenting values that most impede children/adolescents’ life satisfaction. Furthermore, this study can give insights into the need for client-centered therapy while providing information about children’s self-concept based on psychological evaluations or related basic investigations, before providing the emotional regulation intervention program to children with a low level of life satisfaction. Lastly, the results of the current study were compared with the previous studies and its significance and limitations were discussed.

이 연구는 부모의 심리적 통제와 삶의 만족도의 관계에서 자기개념 명확성과 정서조절이 매 개하는지를 알아보는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 초등학교 4~6학년 아동 398명에게 부모의 심리적 통제, 자기개념 명확성, 정서조절, 삶의 만족도 척도를 실시하여 자료를 수집하여 분 석하였고, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 부모의 심리적 통제는 삶의 만족도, 자기개념 명확 성, 정서조절과 모두 부적 상관, 매개변인인 자기개념 명확성, 정서조절은 삶의 만족도와 정 적 상관이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 부모의 심리적 통제가 정서조절에 영향을 주어 삶의 만족도로 가는 경로의 단순매개효과가 유의미하였고, 부모의 심리적 통제가 자기개념 명확성 에 영향을 주고 순차적으로 정서조절에 영향을 주어 결국 삶의 만족도에 영향을 주는 이중 매개효과도 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 특히 부분매개모형 보다 완전매개모형의 적합도가 더 양호하였다. 이는 부모의 심리적 통제가 삶의 만족도에 직접 영향을 주기 보다는 자기개념 명확성과 정서조절을 통해 간접적으로 영향을 준다는 것을 의미한다. 마지막으로 이 연구의 결과를 기존의 연구들과 비교하고 그 의미와 제한점을 논의하였다.
