Sacrosanctum Concilium is among the most significant enactments recorded in Second Vatican Council official documents. While focusing on how Catholic members enter into “full, conscious and active” participation, this document inspires great passion and motivation for worship renewal among all Christian denominations across the world. As a result, many denominations are renewing their official guidelines for congregational worship. The new guidelines are rooted in reflection and study of what makes public worship, not only faithful to the Bible, but also accessible to contemporary contexts. Many denominations in South Korea are greatly concerned about writing and renewing their worship books and directories, while attending to the formative function of worship in Christian faith development. There are several worship and preaching scholars in Korea who are uniquely equipped to guide the church in developing a new worship book for our particular context. Korean scholarship offers the Korean Presbyterian Church a firm foundation to write its own book of worship. In laying this foundation, what contents are necessary to include, and what theological and practical considerations are essential for this work? In this article, I will research the book of worship among four denominations in the USA which have historically had great impact on the theology and practice of the Korean Presbyterian Church. I will examine the contents and characteristic features of worship. Based on this examination and critique, I will then propose essential consideration for the design of a new directory of worship for the Korean Presbyterian Church.

제 2차 바티칸 공의회의 여러 문서 중 가장 주목을 받은 것은 전례헌 장이다. 어떻게 하면 성도들이“의식적이고”“능동적이고”“완전한”예 배 참여를 할 수 있을 것인가에 대해 지대한 관심을 보였던 전례헌장은 로마가톨릭교회 뿐 아니라 많은 교단들의 예배 갱신에 대한 열망과 동 기를 부여하였다. 그 결과로 등장한 것이 바로 예배서의 갱신 작업이었 다. 많은 교단들은 어떻게 하면 성경에 충실하면서도 그 시대를 살아가 는 사람들에게 다가갈 수 있는 예배를 기획할 수 있을까를 고심하였고 이를 그들의 새 예배서에 반영하였다. 최근 한국의 여러 교단들이 신앙 형성에 있어서 예배의 중요성을 절감 하고 예배서와 예전예식서의 작성과 개정에 깊은 관심을 보이고 있다. 해외에서 예배학과 설교학을 전공한 학자들이 각 교단에 포진되어 있으 며, 여러 목회자들과 힘을 합쳐 우리의 신학과 교회의 실천에 적합한 예 배서를 쓸 기초가 다져졌다고 본다. 그렇다면 어떤 내용들이 예배서에 포함되어야 하며, 어떤 신학적, 실천적 고려가 이 작업에 필요할까? 본 논고는 한국의 장로교회의 신학과 예배 실천에 큰 영향을 주었던 북미의 4개 교단의 예배서와 예배 모범을 살펴보면서 그들의 예배서는 어떤 내용이 담겨 있으며 특징이 무엇인지를 살피고자 한다. 그래서 한국의 장로교회가 예배서나 예전예식서를 작성할 때 어떤 점을 고려해야 할 것인지를 설명하겠다.
