The Peasants’ Uprising of Danseong was led by Dangye Kim In-seop and his father Haegiong Kim Ryeong to correct the negative effects of Hwangok and stop the greed and tyranny of corrupt officials. It was the beginning of the starting point of Imsul Revolt. Kim Ryeong and his son were arrested for their involvement in the uprising. The son was released soon, but the father had to lead a life of exile on the Imja Island, Jeolla Province until August of the next year. What consciousness of his drove him to taking the lead in the Peasants’ Uprising? This study is aimed at finding answers to the question. By examining his Dangyejip, Dangye’s Journal, and Ganjeongilrok, the investigator looked into the basis of his consciousness in three aspects including: “introspection into the inside through Seong and Gyeong,” “physiocracy based on utility” and “people-oriented consciousness inherited through the family study.” Dangye was a Confucian scholar that was vigilant and reflective continuously rather than revealing himself in action and transitional intellectual between pre-modern and modern times. He showed the outcomes of his internal training based on a stock of knowledge through his social practice. He was clearly different from the feudal Confucian scholars of Joseon, being a self-examining Confucian scholar and intellectual to practice physiocracy and having the perceptions of reality based on love for people and orientation toward people. These represent the modernity of periodic changes revealed through him and became a certain driving force for him to lead the Peasants’ Uprising of Danseong.

단성농민항쟁은 端磎 金麟燮과 그의 부친 海寄翁 金欞이 주도하여 환곡의 폐단을 시정하고 탐관오리들의 탐학을 중지하게 하고자 일으킨 것으로 임술 민란의 시발점이 되었다. 이 농민항쟁으로 인해 김령과 김인섭 부자는 체포되어 김인섭은 곧 풀려났지만 김령은 이듬해 8월까지 전라도 임자도에서 유배 생활을 하게 되었다. 단계가 농민항쟁을 주도하게 된 데에는 어떤 의식이 영향을 미친 것일까? 본고는 여기에 대한 답을 찾기 위한 것이다. 『단계집』과 『단계일기』, 『간정일록』을 대상으로 ‘誠과 敬을 통한 內面省察’, ‘實用에 기반한 重農主義’, ‘家學으로 계승된 民本意識’의 세 가지 측면에서 그 의식의 저변을 알아보았다. 단계는 자신을 드러내어 행동하기보다 내면으로 부단히 자신을 경계하고 성찰하는 유학자였으며, 온축된 내적 수양의 결과를 사회적 실천으로 보여준 전근대와 근대의 사 이에 있는 과도기적 지식인이라 할 수 있다. 그가 보여준 성찰하는 유학자, 중농을 실천 하는 지식인, 애민과 민본을 저변으로 하는 현실 인식 등은 분명 과거 조선의 봉건주의적 유학자와는 결이 다른 모습을 보여주고 있다. 이것이 단계에게 드러난 시대의 변천이 보여준 근대성이며, 단성농민항쟁을 주도하는 일정한 동력이 되었다.
