Bongsan Mask Dance had originally been given in a round stage like a wide field or a plain below a sloping hill. This came to be gradually replaced by a proscenium stage. The present study deals with the performance form changes of Bongsan-originated Mask Dance following the shift in talchum (mask dance) stages. Talchum performance had been formerly focused on special times and seasons, localities, and field play. Every Dano, lunar May 5, used to gather tens of thousands of spectators in some regions across the country. After a performance in Bumin Hall in Seoul in the 1930s, however, major changes were made. It came to be played regardless of seasonal times and places, going all the year round in theaters. Besides indoor performance, mask dance in the proscenium stage had to concentrate on the frontal audience rather than circularly-seated spectators in the past. In addition, owing to the time limits coming from urbanization and modernization, lots of dramatic or entertaining elements in Bongsan Mask Dance had to be reduced a lot.

본 연구는 봉산탈춤이 비탈진 언덕 아래 평지나 넓은 들판 같은 마당의 원형무대에서 행해지던 공연형태가 점 차 극장식 액자무대[proscenium stage]로 전환되는 과정을 고찰하고, 무대화 과정에서 나타나는 봉산탈춤의 공연 형태 변화를 살펴보고자 한다. 극장식 공연공간의 공연양상은 탈세시화, 탈지역화, 무대공연화의 과정을 거치면서, 매년 5월 단오에 각처의 수만 남녀노소가 운집하여 이루어졌으나, 1930년대 후반 서울 부민관 공연 이 이루어지면서 실내 무대공연화로의 변화가 생기는 것이다. 또한 원형으로 자리 잡고 있는 관객을 상대로 360도 어느 방향으로나 이루어지던 공연 형태가 액자무대에서는 관객을 향한 한쪽 방향만을 향해 공연행태가 이루어지고, 현대화의 상황변화에 따라 시간적 제한을 받을 수밖에 없는 환경으로 변하면서 연희적 요소는 과 거에 비해 많은 부분이 축소될 수밖에 없다.
