The practice of bulbokjang refers to a ritual of inserting sacred objects inside inner recess of a Buddhist statue or a pouch produced for a Buddhist painting in order to consecrate them as objects of worship. This paper examines the ritual lineage and practice of Ven. Dowol Sujin, one of five members of the Preservation Society of Bulbokjang Practice, a National Intangible Cultural Property (Gukka muhyeong munhwajae bulbokjang japbeop bojonhoe). Ven. Sujin, who has resided at Yonghwasa in Damyang since 1974, learned the practice from Ven. Mukdam Seongu. While practicing bulbokjang ritual for various temples and monasteries, Ven. Sujin has taught his disciples how to perform the ritual properly ever since Ven. Mukdam Seongu passed away in 1981. His expertise has been widely acknowledged both domestically and internationally. He performed the ritual not only for domestic temples but also for those located in Japan, Brazil, and China. Ven. Sujin had endeavored to have the bulbokjang practice designated as a National Intangible Cultural Property from early on. His efforts were reported on the Beopbo Daily on July 2, 1994 and in May 1995 issue of Morning Calm, an in-flight magazine of Korean Air. In 1996 and 2006, he personally submitted an application for designating the bulbokjang as an intangible cultural property to the Cultural Heritage Administration. However, his application was rejected by the Cultural Heritage Administration at that time due to its lack of understanding. Nevertheless, he continued his efforts by establishing the Preservation Society for Traditional Bulbokjang Ritual of Korean Buddhism (Hanguk bulgyo jeontong bulbokjang uisik bojonhoe) in 2009 and by performing public demonstration of the ritual in 2010. Ven. Sujin’s efforts to designate the bulbokjang practice as a National Intangible Cultural Property arose an echo across Korean Buddhist orders. Ven. Sujin and other bulbokjang masters including Vens. Mugwan, Seongo, Doseong, and Gyeongam established the Preservation Society of Bulbokjang Practice, a National Intangible Cultural Property. The Society submitted an application to the Cultural Heritagle Administration, and the bulbokjang was designated as the National Intangible Cultural Property No. 139 in April 2019. The bulbokjang practice of Ven. Sujin has been transmitted to his disciple Ven. Jiyeong.

불복장 작법은 불상이나 불화를 조성한 후 불상 내부나 불화 복장낭에 성물(聖物)을 넣는 의식을 말한다. 본고에서는 불복장 작법의 전승자로 인정받고 있는 ‘(사)국가무형문 화재 불복장작법 보존회’ 소속 5명 가운데 도월 수진의 계보와 전승 활동에 대해 고찰하였다. 수진 스님은 1974년 이후 담양 용화사에 주석하며 묵담 성우에게 불복장 작법을 배웠고, 1981년 묵담 성우가 입적한 이후에는 스승에게 배운 그대로 불복장 작법을 설행하며 후학들을 가르쳤다. 그는 국내 사찰뿐만 아니라 일본, 브라질, 중국에서도 불복 장 작법을 설행함으로써 이 분야의 전문성을 인정받았다. 수진 스님은 일찍부터 불복장 작법의 국가무형문화재 지정을 위해 노력하였는데, 1994년 7월 2일 『법보신문』 기사와 대한항공 잡지인 1995년 5월호 『Morning Carm』 에서 확인된다. 그리고 1996년과 2007년에는 직접 무형문화재 신청서를 제출하기도 하였다. 하지만 문화재청에서 불복장 작법에 대한 인식이 부족하여 신청서는 반려되었다. 2009년에는 ‘(사)한국불교 전통불복장 의식보존회’를 결성하고 2010년에는 불복장 작법 시연회를 개최하는 등 국가무형문화재 지정 노력을 계속 이어갔다. 수진 스님의 불복장 작법 국가무형문화재 지정 노력이 불교계에 알려지면서 불복장 작법을 계승하여 설행하고 있던 무관, 성오, 도성, 경암 스님이 수진 스님과 함께 ‘(사)국 가무형문화재 불복장작법 보존회’를 결성하고, 문화재청에 신청서를 제출하여 마침내 2019년 4월에 국가무형문화재 제139호로 지정되었다. 수진 스님의 불복장 작법은 그 제자 지영 스님에게 전승되고 있다.
