By alleviating the strict assumption of ‘the rational choice of investors’, this study was conducted to find a new determinant on the foreign investment based on a framework of the institutional theory perspective, which has the basic assumption of ‘decision-makings under uncertainty with the condition of bounded rationality.’ Among those three traditional types of institutional isomorphic pressure, I focused on the ‘mimetic isomorphism’ to argue that the foreign investment can be significantly influenced by the legitimation process of imitation. The hypothesis is tested with the data of 454 enlisted manufactures during the 5-years period of Y2000∼Y2004 when the amount of foreign investment flow has increased continuously after the full-scaled deregulation related with foreign investment. In the result of the analysis, the influence of previous accumulation of foreign investment on the following inflow was confirmed. Additionally, the influences of some variables, which are alleged determinants on the foreign investment from the previous researches, are also investigated in the model and the successful results in most cases are shown in the analysis.

본 연구는 외국인투자 현상에 있어서 투자자의 합리적 선택이라는 가정을 완화하여 ‘정보의 비대칭성’ 즉, ‘제한된 정보를 바탕으로 한 의사결정’을 그 기본가정으로 하는 제도론적 관점을 적용하여 외국인투자의 결정요인에 대해 유의한 새 변수를 찾아내려 하였다. 본 연구는 특히 ‘제도주의 이론’에서 제시하는 세 가지 유형의 동형화 압력 가운데 ‘모방적 동형화 (mimetic isomorphism)’에 초점을 두어 외국인투자에 있어서 모방에 의한 정당성의 획득 과정이 적용됨을 보이려 하였다. 외국인투자 관련 규제가 철폐된 1999년 이후부터 지속적으로 외 국인지분율이 상승한 2004년까지 5년간의 증권거래소 상장기업 454개에 대한 실증분석 결과, ‘기존의 외국인투자 정도’가 높을수록 후속적인 외국인투자를 유인하여 해당 기업의 외국인지 분이 더욱 높아지는 결과를 얻는다는 가설이 지지되었다. 따라서 외국인투자자는 현지기업에 대한 제한된 정보에 의해 불확실성에 직면하게 되고, 주어진 정보를 활용한 합리적 의사결정 과는 달리, 타 외국인투자자의 투자형태의 모방을 통하여 정당성을 추구하는 모습을 또한 나타내는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 부가적으로 본 연구에서는 국내 금융시장에 대해 기존연구에서 일부 밝혀진 다수의 기업수준 결정요인들을 함께 고려함으로써 외국인투자에 대한 기존이론의 검증과 함께 새로운 관점으로서 제도주의 이론의 유용성을 비교 제시하였다.
