This paper explores the relationship among social capital(tie strength, trust), conflict, and performance in international joint venture. We test our hypotheses through Hayes(2013)’ test method for serial multiple mediator model. The major empirical findings are as follows: first, tie strength has the direct influence on trust but not on conflict and performance. Second, trust has the direct influence on conflict and performance. Third, conflict has the direct influence on performance. To sum up, tie strength doesn’t have the direct influence on conflict and performance but has the indirect influence on them via trust. This means that tie strength has Zhao, Lynch and Chen(2010)’s ‘indirect-only mediation’ effect on performance. Based on this empirical results, several theoretical and practical implications are provided for international joint venture operations and social capital theory. First, this paper reconfirms the relationships between social capital and the IJV performance, but also reveals that the influential paths the social capital takes on the IJV performance are different depending on the dimensions of social capital which the extant theories didn’t count in. Second, the extant researches usually focused on the factors that have positive effects on IJV performance, but by encompassing the negative factors in the model, such as conflict, this paper tries to extend the theoretic horizon of this fields. Third, in the practical perspective, the social tie, one of the key dimensions of social capital, should be considered as one of the major player that give positive effects on the IJV performance by encouraging trust and reducing conflict. This paper considers the construct of ‘conflict between (or among) partners’ as unidimensional, however recent researches suggest conflict can be multidimensional. Researches in this field are expected to expand their views far enough to encompass the extended concepts and constructs.

본 연구의 목적은 국제합작투자에서 유대강도, 신뢰와 같은 사회자본이 갈등과 합작성과에 어떻게 영향을 미치는지를 실증적으로 확인하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 국제합작투자를 수행하 는 국내기업을 대상으로 자료를 수집하였으며, Hayes(2013)가 제안한 연속다중매개모형 분석 법을 활용하여 이들 변수들의 구조적 관계를 확인하였다. 본 연구의 실증분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 유대강도는 신뢰에는 직접적인 영향을 미치 지만 갈등과 합작성과에는 직접적인 영향을 주지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 신뢰는 갈등 과 합작성과에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 갈등은 합작성과에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 종합하면, 유대강도는 갈등과 합작성과에 직 접적인 영향을 미치지는 못하지만 신뢰를 매개로 갈등과 합작성과에 간접적으로 영향을 미친 다는 것을 알 수 있다. 즉 Zhao, Lynch and Chen(2010)이 제안한 ‘간접만 매개효과’의 형태를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 끝으로 본 연구는 이러한 실증결과를 토대로 국제합작투자와 사회자 본이론을 위한 학문적 및 실무적 시사점을 제시하였다.
