As it becomes important to explore and magnify the possibility of new value creation, researchers and field experts are increasingly interested in a group of small venture enterprises that have achieved global success with their own expertise. Among those enterprises, this case study will focus on Meta Biomed Co., Ltd. (“Meta Biomed”), a late-comer small venture enterprise trading medical materials, and its business development. A few noteworthy numbers in 2012 illustrate the company’s scope of development: a revenue of 29,000 million Won, operating profits of 3,800 million Won, and R&D expenses of 3,400 million Won. Established in 1990 based on the new technology in medical/dental materials, Meta Biomed was accelerating its growth by diversifying its fields of research and development and has been leaping forward by building up a global brand since 2006. The case analyses show that Meta Biomed has not only effectively pursued global enterprises but also achieved meaningful business growth based on systemization of its development mechanism including construction and integration of competencies, expansion to overseas, diversification of business portfolio, and global direct investment. Overall, this case study will suggest multilateral implications as to globalization of small venture enterprises.

새로운 가치 창출 가능성의 탐색과 확대가 중요시되면서 최근 들어 성공적으로 글로벌 성과 창출을 달성한 전문 분야의 중소벤처기업에 대한 연구자 및 현업 전문가들의 관심이 증가 하고 있다. 본 사례에서는 후발 의료 소재 중소벤처기업인 (주)메타바이오메드의 성장에 관하여 살펴보고 있다. 2012년 기준 매출액 290억 원, 영업이익 38억 원, 연구개발비 규모 34억 원 인 메타바이오메드는 1990년 치과 소재 관련 신기술 기반으로 창업한 이래 연구개발 분야의 다양화로 성장을 가속화 시켜 왔으며 글로벌 브랜드 구축을 통해 2006년 이후 도약의 시기를 맞이하고 있다. 사례 분석 결과에 따르면, 역량 구축 및 일체화, 국외 진출, 사업 다각화, 글로 벌 직접투자 등으로 연결되어 있는 성장 메커니즘을 체계화시킴으로써 메타바이오메드는 글로벌 기업들을 효과적으로 추격하였을 뿐만 아니라 의미있는 성장을 달성하였다. 본 사례는 중소벤처기업의 글로벌화와 관련하여 다각적인 시사점을 제공해준다.
