As investment restrictions against foreign investors have been lifted gradually, the influence of foreign investors over Korea’s domestic stock market also has expanded. During the global financial crisis, foreign investors went into a selling spree, which invoked a debate on whether massive selling of stocks by foreign investors was caused by pessimistic prospective on the Korean economy or by squeeze of global financial market. Employing the principal component analysis, this study analyzes the relation between net buying of foreign investors and macroeconomic variables, especially focusing on domestic real business cycle and global financial market conditions. The empirical results suggest that the improvement in the domestic economy and the global financial market tends to increase the net buying by foreign investors, however the evidence for domestic macroeconomy is not as robust as global financial market. Aslo it is found that during a crisis, the relative decrease in the foreign reserves turns out to trigger the net selloff by foreign investors.

우리 주식시장에서 외국인 투자자가 높은 비중을 차지하고 있는 가운데, 금융위기 등 외국 인 투자자의 대규모 순매도가 국내 경제여건의 변화를 반영하는 것인지 아니면 국제금융시장 의 변동을 반영하는 것인지 논란이 제기되어 왔다. 본 연구는 1998~2009년 동안 외국인 투자 자의 순매수와 국내외 거시경제요인의 관계를 주성분기법 등을 통해 분석하였다. 개별 국내 거시경제 변수들은 유의한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났으나, 주성분분석을 통해 추출한 광의의 국내경기요인은 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 다만 국제금융시장의 변동성 에 비해서는 외국인 투자자 순매수에 미치는 영향의 견고성이 다소 낮게 나타났으며, 위기 국 면에서의 외환보유고의 상대적 규모 감소도 외국인 투자자 순매도의 한 요인이었던 것으로 분석되었다.
