The continued growth of the Chinese economy accompanied with the expansion of the international investment in China has led to an increase in foreign research and development (R&D) activities in the country. Recently, the MNCs' investment structure in China has changed and the R&D lab increases rapidly, which show the new characteristics of the MNCs investment in China. The purpose of This paper is to examine the changing processes of the activity characteristics in the Multinational companies based in China. Especially, the purpose is to examine how the Organizational Transition of Global R & D Labs in China. In China, the R&D activities by and large go through 5 stage development processes: The first step is an inception phase (1978-1993) during which they explore and then invest in R&D as a form of winning a project rather than get into their stride. The second is a generative phase(1994-1997), where they start to set up their R&D labs in China. The third is a growth phase(1997-2001), in which they buckle down to the foundation of their own R&D labs. The fourth is a full-blown phase(2001-2008), because their R&D labs take a new turn along with China’s becoming a member of to. The final step is an expansion phase(2008-Now), for their R&D lab activities to be the most important turning point. This study is meaningful as it Levels how the multinational R&D labs in China has changed dynamically through five stages.

중국에 대한 해외직접투자 및 중국 경제의 급속한 부상과 더불어 중국 내 글로벌 기업의 투자 구조에도 변화가 일어났다. 중국 정부의 R&D 촉진 활동에 힘입어, 글로벌 기업 R&D 랩도 급속히 증가하였으며 이는 對중국 글로벌 기업 FDI가 새로운 국면을 맞이하게 하였다. 본 논문은 중국 내 글로벌 기업 R&D 활동의 새로운 특성 및 그 변화 과정을 검토하고자 하며 특히 중국 내 글로벌 R&D 랩 조직의 동태적 변천 과정을 고찰하는데 그 목적이 있다. 중국내 글로벌 기업의 R&D 활동은 프로젝트 형태로 중국 시장에 참여하여(1978-1993), R&D 랩을 설립하기 시작한 단계(1994-1997)이며, 글로벌 R&D 랩이 성장하고(1997-2001), 바야흐로 성숙해나가는 단계(2001-2008), R&D 활동을 전면 확장하는 단계(2008-현재) 등 5단계의 변화를 거쳤으며, 본 논문은 5가지 발전 단계를 거친 글로벌 R&D 랩의 조직이 어떻게 역동적으로 변화했는지를 관찰하는데 그 의미가 있다.
