In recent years, establishment of foreign subsidiaries and ambidextrous organization using firm’s exploitative and explorative capabilities is recognized as buffer stocks for dealing with uncertainty in the field of International business and organizational learning. Even though these strategies have been made enterpriser recognize as the strategic postures to overcome the uncertainty, previous studies have hesitated to offer the specific solutions to managers. In this aspect, this research explores the inverted U-shaped relationship between uncertainty and firm performance, and the changes of the effects between foreign subsidiaries’ performance and organizational ambidexterity and firm performance by the levels of uncertainty. For confirming hypotheses, we made the structural models and 537 global company’s employees were surveyed. The key findings are as follows: First, perceived uncertainty has the inverted U-shaped relationship with global company’s performance. Second, when the level of uncertainty is high, general level of uncertainty have a positive effect on firm performance, but the positive effects on the firm performance were reduced. Third, organizational ambidexterity was found to improve the firm performance regardless of the level of uncertainty. Through these results, this study provides two cases of Boeing and Bose Corporation in point. Although this study could not cover the whole of uncertainty, the findings explore the necessity of the reconstructing integrated process based on contextual ambidexterity for the era of volatility.

최근 국제경영 조직학습 분야에서는 불확실성에 대응하기 위한 방안으로 글로벌 기업의 활용과 탐색 역량을 활용하여 경쟁력 있는 해외 자회사를 설립하고, 변화하는 환경에 적합한 양 면적 조직의 필요성을 강조하고 있다. 이러한 관점에서 본 연구는 글로벌 기업의 전략요인을 통제한 상황에서 불확실성과 기업성과 간 역U자형 관계를 탐색하고, 불확실성의 수준별로 해외 자회사 성과 및 조직 양면성이 기업성과에 미치는 효과 변화를 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 중국에 진출한 글로벌 기업 직원 537명으로부터 설문지를 수집하였고, 이 가운데 불성실한 응답지를 제외한 352명의 관측치를 실증분석하였다. 분석결과 첫째, 불확실성과 기업성과 간에는 역U자형 관계가 존재하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 적정수준의 불확실성은 기업성과에 대한 해외 자회사 성과의 양(+)의 효과를 증진시키나, 불확실성이 높은 경우에는 해외 자회사 성과가 기업성과에 미치는 긍정적 효과가 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 맥락적 조직 양면성은 불확실성의 수준과는 무관하게 기업성과를 확대시키는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 분석결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 불확실성에 직면한 기업들에게 맥락적 양면성을 갖춘 역동적인 통합 프로세스를 구축하는 것이 효율적인 전략적 선택임을 제안한다.
